Jigme Dorji National Park is the second largest national park in the Bhutan, located in the part western of the country.

To know

About 6,500 people within 1,000 families live in the park, practicing subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry.

Geographical notes

It occupies most of the territory of the district of Gasa, as well as the northwestern areas of the District of Thimphu and the District of Paro allowing you to embrace all three climatic zones of Bhutan, ranging from 1400 to over 7000 meters in altitude.

The mountain Jomolhari and the Mt. Jitchu Drake they are revered as homes of local deities.

The Mo Chhu, Wangdi Chhu and Pa Chhu rivers have their sources in the glacial lakes located in the park.

Jigme Dorji National Park contains some of Bhutan's most important and precarious glaciers. These glaciers have thawed significantly over the course of recorded history, causing lethal and destructive floods and glacial lake runoffs.

Flora and fauna

The park provides shelter for 37 known species of mammals including several endangered, threatened or vulnerable species such as takin, snow leopard, clouded leopard, Bengal tiger, bharal or the blue sheep of the Himalayas, the musk deer of the Himalayas, theTibetan bear, the red panda, the dhole or wild Indian dog, and the spotted linsango. It is also home to the Indian leopard, del serao, of the sambar, of the muntjac, of the goral, of the marmot, of the pika and over 300 bird species. It is also the only park in Bhutan where the animal (takin), flower (blue poppy), bird (raven) and national tree (cypress) exist together.

The park is also home to a large variety of herbs Himalayan used in traditional medicine and is the most active geothermal region in the country.

  • Thermal baths (A 4 hour walk from the road closest to Goen Damje). Bathe in the hot springs of Gasa Tsachhu, where simple accommodations are available.
