Angkor Archaeological Park - Parque Arqueológico de Angkor

Angkor Wat Temple.

O Angkor Archaeological Park is the most famous national park in Cambodia.

Understand

The park extends over 400 km², including the forested areas, and contains magnificent ruins of various capitals of the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th centuries. The most famous are the Angkor Wat Temple it's the Bayon Temple with its numerous decorations.

Angkor Archaeological Park has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992. Angkor has no accommodations, only few facilities; the neighboring city of Siem Reap, just 6 km to the south, is the tourist hub for the area.

To arrive

The vast majority of visitors arrive by plane using Siam Reap - Angkor airport [1] (IATA: REP | ICAO: VDSR). The airport receives daily flights from the main cities in the region:

Commuting between the terminal and the city center can be done in several ways. The most typical is a tuk-tuk, a trailer pulled by a motorbike, which takes between 10 and 15 minutes to make the trip, with very low cost.

Fees and Permissions

Non-Cambodian visitors need the Angkor Pass to enter Angkor Archaeological Park and can be purchased as a 1 day (USD37), 3 day (USD62) or 7 day (USD72) pass - cash only. The 3-day pass is valid for 3 days in a week, while the 7-day pass is valid for 7 days in a month.

Children under the age of 12 can enter free of charge by presenting their passport; The ID is not required for visitors who pay the full fee. Both the 3-day and 7-day options involve having a photo printed on your Angkor Pass. If you have a guide or driver, you don't need to buy a pass for them as they will most certainly be Cambodian and can enter for free. Passes issued after 5:00 pm each day can be used to enter the park without counting a day's use on your pass. However, the sale of passes ends at 17:30.

Make sure you buy your Angkor Pass only at the official APSARA ticket sales booths located at the entrance checkpoints on the way to the park. Passes cannot be purchased from any other source, including tour operators.

Please also note that Angkor passes are not transferable, so please do not buy one from someone else. Regular checks for valid passes are carried out at almost every location within the park, even including some restrooms, so be sure to take it with you at all times. And don't miss it! - otherwise you'll have to go back to the box office to buy another one, or give up on seeing one of the most remarkable sights in the world.

Guides can be hired for around $20 a day and are available for most major languages. Hiring a guide for at least the first day can help you orient yourself between the temples and is particularly helpful in finding and explaining bas-reliefs, which may otherwise be difficult to understand. Books (guides) are also useful - the online guide made by Maurice Glaize is one of the best.

"Ancient Angkor" is surprisingly good. Particularly if you are interested in the sculptures on the walls and towers. The book will keep you busy for hours. Authored by Michael Freeman and Claude Jacques, the price is $27.95 in bookstores. New copies are surprisingly sold by vendors around the temples for just $7, but the price drops to $1 by the end of the day. Highly recommended.

Be sure and get to the temples early. You can enter the park from 5:00 am. There are fewer visitors early in the morning and the sun is not at full strength. Getting to the temples at 8:00 instead of 9:00 can make a world of difference.
