Lines and Geoglyphs at Nasca and PalpaCultural(i) (iii) (iv)Located in the arid coastal plain of Peru some 400 km south of Lima, the geoglyphs of Nazca and Pampas de Jumana cover approximately 450 km2. These lines, drawn in the ground between 500 BC. AD and 500 AD. AD, raise one of the great puzzles of archeology because of their quantity, their nature, their size and their continuity. Some of these geoglyphs represent living creatures, others stylized plants or fantastic beings, still others geometric figures several kilometers long. It is assumed that they would have had a ritual function linked to astronomy.Nazca Lines, die Spinne, Peru (11341464226) .jpg
Qhapaq Ñan, Andean road network
crosses 6 countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina.
Cultural(ii) (iii) (iv) (vi)This large network of communication, trade and defense routes covers more than 30,000 km. Built by the Incas over several centuries and partly based on a pre-Inca infrastructure, this extraordinary network crossing one of the most difficult geographical terrains in the world connects the snow-capped peaks of the Andes (at more than 6,000 m) to the coast passing through by tropical rainforests, fertile valleys and deserts. The Qhapac Ñan which reached its maximum extension in the XVe century spanned the length and breadth of the Andes. The property comprises 273 individual sites spanning over 6,000 km. They were chosen to illustrate the architectural, technical, political, social achievements of the network as well as its associated infrastructure, intended for trade, accommodation and storage of goods, and sites of religious importance.Qhapaq ñan Grande route inca.jpg
1 Chavin archaeological site (in the Cordillera Blanca)Cultural(iii)This archaeological site gave its name to the culture that developed between 1500 and 300 BC. AD in this high valley of the Peruvian Andes. The architecture of this set of terraces and squares surrounded by paired stone constructions as well as its ornamentation, largely zoomorphic, give a striking aspect to this ancient place of worship, one of the most ancient and most famous pre-Columbian sites. most famous.Chavín Stairs (Close-up) .jpg
2 City of Cuzco Cultural(iii) (iv)Located in the Peruvian Andes, the city became, under the great Inca chief Pachacutec, a complex urban center with distinct administrative and religious functions. 3 Sacred city of Caral-Supe (In the region Central coast)Cultural(ii) (iii) (iv)The archaeological site of Caral-Supe, which covers 626 ha, is located on an arid desert plateau overlooking the verdant valley of Supe. It dates from the late archaic period of the central Andes, there is 5,000 years, and it is the oldest such city in the Americas. It is an impressive site in terms of design and the complexity of its architectural and spatial elements, including its monumental stone and earth platforms and hollow circular courtyards. Caral, which is just one of 18 urban settlements in the area, is particularly well preserved. There is a complex and monumental architecture, including six large pyramidal structures. A quipu (a rope to which several other knotted cords were attached, used to record and transmit information in the Andes) found on site testifies to the development and complexity of Caral's civilization. The town plan and some of its components, notably the pyramid structures and the elite residential group, testify to ceremonial functions, reflecting the power of what one might call religious ideology. The site owes its remarkable conservation to its early abandonment and late discovery.PeruCaral19.jpg
