Pessada

Pessada is a small village in the island of Kefalonia.

To know

Unknown to most people, Pessada has a pier where ferries leave for the nearby island of Zakynthos. From an administrative point of view it belongs to the municipality of Leivatho. Despite a respectable stretch of coastline and the presence of a small but pretty crescent-shaped beach next to the pier, the town cannot yet be defined as a seaside resort due to the lack of accommodation facilities. At least until 2000 there was a hunting reserve in operation with even a heliport for its wealthy guests who obviously cannot afford to waste even a minute of their precious time.

The inhabitants of Pessada are more closed-minded than elsewhere. This is explained by the fact that most of them (about 200) are of advanced age. Perhaps this is what led a French guide to the Ionian Islands (perhaps from the "Routard" series) to define Pessada as "squalid". It is a personal point of view and in any case unworthy to appear in an internationally renowned travel guide. The beauty of the surrounding landscape is enough to convince the opposite. Mount Ainos dominates behind with its fir forest and then there is the sea and the giant olive trees that give an air of an Ionian sea still intact.

How to get

On boat

Pessada is connected to the locality of Aghios Nikolaos a Zakynthos from a ferry service valid only for the summer period (generally until the end of October). The first ferry leaves at 07:45 local time every day except Wednesday. The second at 17:30 every day always except Wednesday and the third every day (always except Wednesday) at 18:00. The crossing takes one hour. The service is managed by the company Schinari-Pessada local lines (tel .: 302695023984). Sometimes the crossings are canceled.

Events and parties

What to do

Recreational activities are limited to bathing which can be practiced on the magnificent beach near the pier or in the smaller one of Koundourata. Other nearby beaches are those of Spartià protected by a high cliff, of Karavados and of Trapezaki. Simple walks among the olive groves ensure magnificent views of the sea and the island of Zakynthos.

Shopping

How to have fun

Where to eat

There is only one restaurant located at the entrance of the town and with a menu of not wide choice but nevertheless discreet. In the summer months a kiosk with sandwiches and drinks works near the pier from which the ferries to Zakynthos leave (prices a bit high). There is a grocery store in the center. The nearest supermarket is the one on the street Argostoli-Poros, roughly at the Castle of San Giorgio even if everyone prefers to go to Argostoli for daily shopping. Much appreciated by the locals is the tavern in the nearby village of Keramiès (behind the school building) for its moderate prices and genuine wine.

Where stay

In Pessada there are no hotels except the Sunrise Inn which is located in the nearby hamlet of Koundourata and where it is hopeless to find a place as it generally works by reservation and with a mostly English clientele. Some magnificent private villas that dominate the beach of Pessada from above are offered for rent in the summer period but are advertised on English sites. You can also ask the inhabitants who sometimes rent the rooms of their homes but this depends on their mood.
