Poros ' (Πόρος in Greek) is a passenger port and a seaside resort in the south-east of the island Greek of Kefalonia.
To know
Poros is a very crowded seaside resort, part of the municipality of Elios Pronni.
Background
Poros is to be identified with the ancient city of Pronnoi of which today only traces of the acropolis remain. Pronnoi was part of the Tetrapoli, a defensive alliance close in classical times between the four major cities of Kefalonia.
Archaeological excavations carried out at the end of the twentieth century have shown, however, that the territory was inhabited from remote times. A vaulted tomb very similar to those of Mycenae with a diameter of 6.80 meters was found in the locality of Tzanato.
In the Drakaina cave, amphorae and idols were found dating back to a period between the seventh and second centuries BC. The cave was dedicated to the cult of the Nymphs as an inscription attests. Further excavations in the same cave have unearthed stone jewelry and various objects that date back to an era prior to 2000 BC.
How to orient yourself
How to get
Poros is connected to Kyllini, on the mainland, from the company's ferries "Strintzis". Ferries leave Kyllini at 5:30 pm and take an hour and a half (or more depending on the type of ship) to get to Poros.
Buses departing from the station Kifissou of Athens make a stop a Patras before continuing to Kyllini where they enter the ferry. Once disembarked the buses continue to Argostoli. The ticket issued at the KTEL office includes the passage by ship.
