Pierre is the capital of the US state South Dakota and lies on the Missouri River.

Around 1817 a permanent settlement was established at the fur trading post on the west bank of the Missouri Fort Pierre Chouteau, named after a merchant from St. Louis. The city of Pierre was founded around 1880 on the east side of the river. In 1889, Pierre became the state capital South Dakota.
