Plasencia is a historically interesting city in Cáceres (Province) in Extremadura.

background

Plasencia is located on the banks of the Rio Jerte on the old Roman road Via de la Plata. The Celts established a first settlement. The Romans built a garrison camp. Alfonso VIII recaptured the city from the Moors in the 12th century and repopulated it in 1186. It was not until the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa on July 16, 1212 that the Moors were finally defeated. Plasencia became a bishopric as early as 1189. That was the reason for the construction of a Romanesque cathedral (Catedral Vieja). In 1208 the oldest Spanish university was founded. Plasencia later became less important. In the 15th century aristocrats moved to Plasencia and built palaces, manors and churches. Together they form a monument complex that is well worth seeing.

  • Parador de Plasencia ****. The Parador was set up in the Convento de las Domenicos (Dominican monastery) with a small but beautiful cloister. The Parador is not just a good hotel. It's also well worth seeing and has a good restaurant. However, the atmosphere is quite stiff and museum-like, the pool is small and only a meter deep. Outside catering is completely absent here, which is unusual for Spain.

trips

  • La Vera Valley. From Plasencia you can take a trip to the La Vera Valley to the Yuste Monastery. Especially in spring, when the cherries are in bloom, a detour on the EX-203 is worthwhile. Emperor Charles V spent his old age in the Yuste Monastery. Charles V died in Yuste on September 21, 1558. In his palace, which is attached to the monastery, you can visit his audience room, his bedroom and the church. From the bed the emperor had a view through the open door of the high altar. This represents his family who worships God. Karl lived in his small palace, but had contact with the monks in the monastery. He had once brought over 150 advisers and servants with him. From the parking lot of the monastery there is a narrow but good road to Garganta de Olla, a small old town with buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries. The church of San Lorenzo is from the 16th century. The Plaza Mayor is also worth seeing. The mighty balconies are interesting.
