Geographical notes
Located on the top of one of the last offshoots of Chianti Fiorentino, 521 meters above sea level, between the Ema valley and the upper Valdarno, is located in an open position to the north as far as the Pistoia Apennines and to the south-east towards the Valdarno until Arezzo. The territory is mainly hilly, alternating woods with olive groves and vines.
Background
Much of the knowledge of this area has been reconstructed thanks to the discovery of ancient parchments from the Abbey of San Cassiano (Montescalari) (1038-1130) currently preserved in the State Archives of Florence. The name of the locality of Poggio alla Croce is traced for the first time in one of these documents from 1038. This cluster of houses, now home to the town, began to develop right at the crossing point between the two valleys marked by a cross visible from both valleys. From documents found in the Episcopal Archive of Fiesole and of the Bigallo in Florence, we note the presence of a small hospital with an adjoining oratory. Named after SS. Simon the Canaanite and Judas Thaddeus, consisting of a single room and a single bed and some plots of land probably represented a reference for pilgrims and travelers of the time, until the mid-sixteenth century. We have news of this building, around which the town would later develop, until 1436, when it was reunited with the church of S. Pietro al Terra in Brollo in the municipality of Figline and Incisa Valdarno. Between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, the life of Poggio alla Croce is linked to national history. The first forms of association are born, politics enters daily life. With the foundation of the Mutual Aid Society, the country finds a new point of reference, which between moments of happy activity and periods of abandonment will reach our days. The affirmation of the new model of industrial development determines a transformation of the agricultural vocation of this area. Agricultural activities gradually cease to be at the center of family income, farms are abandoned, as well as the work of the woods. The cultivation of iris itself, which had constituted a fundamental source of income, becoming less and less competitive on the market, is losing its importance. In recent years, with the greatest interest in the territory and rural communities, the Poggio is experiencing an economic recovery, with the recovery of agricultural land and the birth of farmhouses, accompanied by the restoration of old houses and the birth of new residential settlements. .
