Poipet(Khmer: ក្រុង ប៉ោយប៉ែត) is a city in northwest of Cambodia on the border to Thailand. Here the most popular route of entry to Cambodia is overland. Many individual tourists and tour groups now use this traffic route, as the temples of Angkor Wat are only a 4-hour drive away.
background
The city itself, sadly but true, has nothing to offer a traveler. There are guest houses, but every tourist should find their way to as soon as possible Siem Reap or across the border to Thailand compete.
getting there
For the last part in Aranyaprathet to the border, it is best to take a tuk-tuk (approx. THB 60) from the train station. Often drivers and touts try to guide the unsuspecting tourist to the Cambodian consulate for a fee to get a visa. This is absolutely unnecessary, visas on arrival are issued at the border. The e-Visa is also accepted at this border crossing.
Obtaining visas is theoretically easy, the forms are simple, but underpaid and corrupt officials can make it a nerve-wracking ordeal. The official price of the visa is $ 30, but it practically depends on the mood of the officer in charge. The prepared dollar bills are often not accepted and the official insists on payment in Thai baht and can only be appeased by a few more dollars. The only way to avoid these annoyances is to obtain the visa in advance (at the embassy or as an e-Visa via the Internet). Information about onward travel to Siem Reap can be found in the article there.
By train
Those arriving from Thailand arrive by bus or train in the border town of Aranyaprathet. The Thai border post Aranyaprathet-Ban Klong Luk Border Station opened on July 1, 2019. It is not yet clear when the planned cross-border passenger traffic will begin.
A train from Phnom Penh will run via Battambang on Tuesdays at the beginning of 2019. Wednesday to Friday there are three trains a day from / to {{Sisophon]].
