Info
The area can be divided into Vorpommern and Farther Pomerania, between which the Oder has served as a border river since 1945, although the capital Szczecin is located on the left side of the river. Traditionally, this city was the most important of Pomerania. East of the actual Pomerania is the region of Pomerellen, which has not belonged to the Pomeranian principality since the 11th century and of which Gdansk (Danzig) is the main city.
Pomerania, which has remained German since 1945, traditionally called Western Pomerania, belongs to the federal state Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Pomerania, which became Polish in 1945, traditionally Farther Pomerania, is now divided into the provinces (voivodeships) West Pomerania with the capital Szczecin, Pomorze (Pomerania) with the capital Gdansk and Kuyavian-Pomerania.
