Porto di Mezzo is a fraction of the municipality of Lastra a Signa in the province of Florence.

Background

The village developed in the thirteenth century along the Arno river adjacent to the small river port and home to a ferry (1326). It had the name of "Mezzana a Signa" due to its ancient location on an islet, at a point where the river divided into two branches.

Before the meeting of the former municipalities of San Martino in Gangalandi and Lastra a Gangalandi in the municipality of Lastra a Signa, depended on the municipality of San Martino.

In the Middle Ages the port was called "Port of Florence"since it was the main commercial port in the Florentine possessions and there was a river customs office for the duties of goods in transit.

Between 1881 and 1921 in the city there was a station of the Florence-Signa tramway, which from 1895 reached Porto di Mezzo, constituting one of the main connections with the western area of ​​the city.

Villa Caruso of Bellosguardo

In 1906 the villa was purchased by Enrico Caruso, therefore it is also referred to as Villa Caruso; the tenor, enraptured by the beauty and peace that he could find in his new residence, had it restored, enriching it with numerous works of art and structural interventions according to the classic style of Tuscan villas, which gave it its current appearance. In 1995 the municipality of Lastriano decided to buy the villa with the intention of enhancing its architectural beauty and entrusted the management to the Villa Caruso Association to promote its enhancement by organizing concerts, shows, exhibitions and visits. The Enrico Caruso Museum, the only one in Italy dedicated to the tenor, has been open to the public since 25 February 2012. The museum collects memorabilia and everyday objects that belonged to Caruso. The Park of Villa Caruso di Bellosguardo is one of the few Tuscan examples of a late Renaissance garden.
