Portsmouth is a port city in the english county Hampshire.

background

Portsmouth was founded in the 12th century and has been an important port city from the start. In the 15th century the city became the main base of the British Navy, the Royal Navy, a role it has retained to this day. The navy is the largest employer in the city, which is accordingly strongly influenced by a close connection to the military and the maritime history of England. Due to its military importance, Portsmouth was bombed many times during World War II and large parts of the city were destroyed. Today's Portsmouth is therefore characterized by post-war buildings, although individual districts, especially near the harbor, have been reconstructed in the original style. Today Portsmouth is also an important university city, which is why the cityscape is characterized by many young people.
