Urban centers

  • Winchester - County town of Hampshire and first capital of theEngland, mainly known for its ancient cathedral and its medieval center.
  • Aldershot - Headquarters of the "British Army", has two decent military museums.
  • Alton - Historic market town located at either end of the Mid Hants steam railway line.
  • Andover - This lovely town is an excellent base for exploring the countryside of the Wessex, both in Hampshire and across the border in Wiltshire.
  • Basingstoke - A new 'soulless' town, Basingstoke still offers some of Hampshire's best shopping and entertainment, as well as an unusual 'living history' museum.
  • Eastleigh - The Spitfire first flew here, but modern Eastleigh has little to offer the traveler beyond good budget accommodation and excellent transport links.
  • Fareham - Coastal town that houses the Roman and medieval Portchester Castle and various impressive fortresses dating back to the Napoleonic Wars
  • Farnborough - The "cradle" of British aviation which still hosts the biennial "International Air Show" and a tiny aerospace museum.
  • Gosport - In front of Portsmouth compared to the port they share, Gosport has two renowned naval museums.
  • Lymington - Beautiful Georgian seaside town in the national park of New Forest.
  • Odiham - Small rural town with regular markets and countryside ideal for walking.
  • Portsmouth - A naval city active since 1500, Portsmouth blends priceless maritime heritage with impressive modern architecture.
  • Romsey - Market town on the edge of New Forest, houses an abbey and many historic houses.
  • Southampton - Hampshire's largest city is also its commercial, educational and information hub. Good for shopping, with two universities and the main cruise ship port UK are some of the elements that attract new visitors.
