Wadowice poviat - poviat in Poland, in in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship with headquarters in Wadowice. Created as part of the administrative reform in 1999.

Characteristic

The poviat is located in the south-western part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in the Carpathian Foothills. In the western part it is located in the Silesian Foothills, in the southern part in the Little Beskids, and in the north-eastern part in the Wieliczka Foothills. It covers the area of ​​the Skawa basin.

An administrative division

There are three urban centers in the poviat: Andrychów, kalwaria Zebrzydowska and Wadowice.

The poviat consists of 10 communes, including 3 urban-rural ones: Wadowice, Andrychów and Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, and 7 rural ones: Brzeźnica, Lanckorona, Mucharz, Spytkowice, Stryszów, Tomice and Wieprz.

The Wadowice Poviat covers 645 km². According to data from 2009, the poviat is inhabited by 155,923 inhabitants, the population density indicator is 242 people / km². Due to the level of population density and the number of inhabitants among communes, Andrychów is the most populated commune (42,984 inhabitants, 428 persons per 1 km²), while the least populated area is Mucharz (3,856 inhabitants, 103 persons per 1 km²).

61% of the poviat's area is arable land, and 23% forest land.

The Wadowice poviat, occupying a part of the Little and Middle Beskids in the basin of the Skawa River, with strongly undulating hills and gentle valleys, rich in various values ​​and conducive to cultural, natural and religious forms of tourism.

Tourism

Religious tourism attracts the most tourists and pilgrims, especially during religious and cultural events. The most important tourist attractions are:

  • Wadowice, the hometown of Karol Wojtyła - John Paul II, where you can see his family home and other places commemorating his life,
  • Mountain sanctuary in Groń John Paul II, a place dedicated to the memory of the Polish Pope, where there are, among others the armchair on which John Paul II sat during his visit to Skoczów in 1995.
  • Passion and Marian sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska together with the Glorious Mystery of the Lord's Passion in Holy Week and the Mystery of the Funeral and Triumph of Our Lady in August, held here every year.

There are numerous sacred monuments in Wadowice: the Basilica of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Sanctuary of St. Joseph and the Monastery of Discalced Carmelites, Monastery of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Families of Nazareth, Pallottine Monastery.

In addition, there are historic wooden churches (Barwałd Dolny, Marcyporęba, Nidek, Radocza) and brick ones as well as monasteries, chapels and cemeteries in the poviat.
