History

The oldest mention of Łask comes from 1356. The town rights were granted by Władysław II Jagiełło in 1422. The town was the seat of Łask, belonging to the mighty Łaski family. Its most prominent representatives were: Jan Łaski (died 1531), the crown chancellor, and then the archbishop of Gniezno, codifier of rights, initiator of writing down the salaries of the archbishopric of Gniezno, and his nephew, also Jan (died 1569), an outstanding representative of the Reformation movement. Łask was then one of the richest cities in Poland. However, the fires caused it to decline and only 2 men were sent to the war of 1459.
In 1867, the city became the seat of the poviat.
Insurgent troops were active in the area in the January Uprising. In 1905, demands were made to introduce the Polish language to schools. In September 1939, many soldiers were killed in the fights with the German invaders in the district. In many places there are war quarters and graves in cemeteries.
