Much of the sights are on the plateau. It is protected from the sea side by a wall, and the old cannons are still in its loopholes. In the southern part of the plateau is the government district:
- 1 Presidential palace. It is currently being extensively redesigned with the help of financial help from China. There are several government buildings and banks in the immediate vicinity.
- 2 Quartel Jaime Mota. The old barracks has seen better days. It is right next to the presidential palace.
- 3 Monumento do Diogo Gomes. The monument to this seafarer stands at the southern point of the plateau and offers a good view of the beach Praia do Gamboa.
- 4 town hall (Cámara Municipal)
- 5 cathedral (Nossa Senhora da Graça)
- 6 Palace of Justice
- 7 Supreme Court
- 8 Fundação Amílcar Cabral. With her mural.
- 9 Alexandre Square in Albuquerque, in the center of the old town. Albuquerque was a governor of the island and known as a passionate card player. For this reason the corners of the square are paved with the symbols of the playing cards, on the corner by the town hall there is e.g. a "red heart".
- 1 Mercado Municipal. Even if you don't want to buy anything, the market is worth a visit. You shouldn't be claustrophobic, however, and a certain amount of caution is required.
- 11 Praia de Gamboa. Named for the city, but not suitable for swimming.
- 13 Igreja do Nazareno. Protestant Church.
- 14 Assemblada Nacional. Parliament building.
- 15 Mercado de sucupira. If the Mercado Municipal is not enough for you, you can visit this African-looking market.
- 16 Ilhéu de Santa Maria. The small island at the port entrance is currently uninhabited and empty. There was once a quarantine station for lepers here. Chinese businessmen want to build a casino here in the near future.
