Santiago (portug. Ilha de Santiago) is the largest island of with an area of 991 km² Cape Verde, it belongs to the island group of Ilhas de Sotavento (German: "Islands under the wind"). With around 270,000 inhabitants, Santiago is the most populous island; around half of the total population of Cape Verde lives here.
Regions
The island of Santiago, like its neighbors, is of volcanic origin. It is characterized by two mountain ranges, the Pico da Antónia with an altitude of 1394 m, it is located in the center of the island, its surroundings have been declared a nature park. The one further north Serra Malagueta is not quite as high at 1064 m, but it is enough that the northeast trade wind lets its clouds rain down here as well. The Serra Malagueta has also been declared a natural park. Between these two mountain ranges lie plateaus, called Achadas, there are wide valleys and individual witness mountains, some of which are quite steep. Sugar cane and mango trees thrive here in the interior of the island, but acacias, euphorbias and figs also grow. All in all, the interior of the country is fertile, although agriculture is predominantly structured on a small scale.
The coastal region, especially in the south, is much drier; similar ones can be found on the island Ribeiras (Dry valleys) as with their neighbors. Therefore, several reservoirs were created for irrigation. The cultivation of bananas is then also possible in the lower areas.

- 5 Pedra Badejo, on the east coast, 10,000 inhabitants, is part of the municipality Santa Cruz.
- 6 Sáo Domingos is a place in the center of the island, the municipality of the same name extends to the east coast.
