Prenzlauer Berg it's a neighborhood (Ortsteil) of Berlin, belonging to the district (Bezirk) of Pankow.
To know
Prenzlauer Berg is one of the trendy districts of Berlin, with Kreuzberg is Friedrichshain. It features old buildings, many of which date from the late 19th century (1889 to 1905). Over 80% of all apartments in the area were built before 1948 and the oldest in existence is from 1852 and is located at 77 on the Kastanienallee. During the Second World War, some buildings were destroyed and the area was neglected in the days of the German Democratic Republic. The last ruins were only removed in the early 1970s. In the mid-80s of the twentieth century, following the collapse of a crumbling building, the government decided to restore some buildings.
Today Prenzlauer Berg forms a homogeneous neighborhood. More than 300 buildings have been declared of historical importance, such as the Stadtbad on Oderbergerstraße, the brewery on Milastraße and the one on Knaackstraße. The area between Kastanienallee, Kollwitz and Helmholtzplatz is full of restaurants and bars. The center of nightlife is instead around the Eberswalder Straße underground station, at the intersection with Schönhauser Allee. This intersection is called "Schönhauser corner", from the title of a cult film from 1957.
Many young people live in Prenzlauer Berg: the percentage of residents aged between 20 and 44 is around 47.9% against an average of 30.5% for the whole of Berlin. This is also due to the high percentage of one- and two-room apartments available for rent. The percentage of singles it is very high, about 46%.
Prenzlauer Berg also has a high birth rate due to the large number of young women living in the neighborhood.
