Puerto Bertrand is a small village in Great South, in the Región de Aysén in Chile. The small town is located directly on Lake Bertrand from which the wild Rio Baker, the most water-rich river in Chile, rises.

getting there

By bus

One-time daily connection on the Ruta 7 between Coyhaique and Cochrane with the bus companies 'Don Carlos' or 'Sao Paulo'. Reserve in Coyhaique or Cochrane or by phone.

Stop in Puerto Bertrand northwards between 9:30 and 10 a.m. and southwards between 2 and 4 p.m.

In the street

The place is in the southern part of the Carretera Austral, the next small town is approx. 60 km away Cochrane in the south.

The border crossing to Argentina is via the gravel road X-83 15 km north of Cochrane Paso Roballos only possible outside the winter season. This is the southernmost road connection to Argentina along the Carretera Austral. In the north, the border crossing is over Chile Chico at Lake General Carrera Los Antiguos (Argentina) possible.

In winter, however, the border crossing is at Coyhaique to recommend.

  • 1 Confluencia Río Baker, approx. 15 km south in sight on the Carretera Austral, roaring union of the Rio Baker with the Rio Neff, after a short walk you come to the lookout point directly at the waterfall-like confluence.

The Rio Baker is good for Rafting at. Various tours are offered on site.

Otherwise are too Kayak and boat tours possible on the calm lake.

There are several mini markets in the village with a simple offer. There you can also find fresh rolls and sometimes fruit and vegetables. You can usually pay by card.

There is a small pizzeria on Carretera Austral, not in the center of the village, which also serves as a snack bar and cafe for those passing through.

At the end of the village, across from the minimarket, there is a simple campsite. "Cabañas" (small holiday huts) are often rented out in the immediate vicinity and on the Rio Baker.

Practical advice

There is no tourist information office in the small village. But you can inquire well with the locals or the organizers on site. Most of the time, however, they have very little knowledge of English.

  • The provider "Entel" offers good telephone and mobile internet reception (3G) in town.

  • Puerto Río Tranquilo. Location on Lago General Carrera and starting point for the famous marble caves there, approx. 65 km north on Carretera Austral.
