Puerto Río Tranquilo is a small town in Great South, in the Región de Aisen in Chile.The location on the lake on the Carretera Austral and near the Laguna San Rafael National Park makes it a popular travel destination. The most famous highlight are probably the washed-out marble caves at Lake General Carrera, where the place is located.

General Carrera Lake is the largest in Chile and after that Lake Titicaca the second largest in South America. In Argentina it is called "Lago Buenos Aires". It is up to 580m deep.

The calm river bay on the Río Tranquilo on the otherwise often rough lake was used as a landing stage early on. She also gave the place its name, which translates as "harbor on the calm river".

By bus

There is a daily bus connection on Ruta 7 to Cochrane, Coyhaique and even right after Caleta tortel.

Stop in Tranquilo northwards between 11am and 12pm and southwards between 1pm and 2pm.

In the street

The place is in the southern part of the Carretera Austral between Cochrane and Coyhaique. He is from Argentina well over Chile Chico at Perito Moreno and Los Antiguos to reach. In winter it is preferable to cross the border at Coyhaique.

Marble caves: Cuevas de Marmol

The marble caves washed out by the waters of the General Carrera Lake are the main attraction of the place. They are a few kilometers south and can only be reached by water. From simple boat tours (75 min; from CLP 8,000) to guided canoe tours (approx. CLP 30,000) there are various options and providers. These can easily be booked on site with the organizers along the main street. With the small outboard motor boats for about 10 people you can go far into the caves. This is not possible with the larger, more luxurious excursion boat.

Cheaper canoe tours are offered by Puerto Marmol (6 km south on the Carretera Austral). Here the tour in a two-man canoe costs only approx. CLP 12,500 p.p ..

Glacier Exploradores

There are impressive ice caves and ice climbing opportunities at the Exploradores glacier in the valley of the same name. Tours are available from approx. CLP 40,000 p.p. offered by various providers in town.

There are no real options for going out in the small town. Nevertheless, an evening in the accommodation or on the campsite can sometimes be longer. You are most likely to get drinks in the supermarket, the selection is very manageable.

There are many moderate hostels and guest rooms, but in the high season it can still be difficult to find a free room.

Practical advice

There is no ATM in the village, you can usually pay by card. You can get cash in Cochrane, Chile Chico and Coyhaique.

There is no post office in town.

The Wi-Fi offered in accommodations and restaurants is often congested and slow. The provider "Entel" offers good coverage with telephone reception and fast mobile Internet (3G) on site. Mobile Internet is preferable to public Wi-Fi connections, especially during peak times.
