Puerto Madryn is a city with 80,000 inhabitants, located in the bay Golfo Nuevo on the Atlantic coast of Patagonia in the south Argentina, in northeastern Chubut Province. It is both an important export port, from which agricultural products from the Río Chubut Valley are shipped, and the main tourist center of the entire Chubut Province.

The bay Golfo Nuevo looks like a natural amphiteater with desert-like, bizarre hills all around. The place is interesting for swimmers and divers as well as for animal lovers: For the former, the city offers first-class sandy beaches and calm, deep blue, transparent water that makes diving particularly attractive. The others are more likely to be close to the diverse penguin, sea lion and elephant seal colonies of the Peninsula Valdés estimate that extends northeast of the city. In the bays in the area you can also see different species of whales, such as those up to 12 m long, at different times of the year Southern right whale (span. Ballena Franca Austral) and the predatory ones Orca, but also watch different dolphins.

Since many foreigners visit Puerto Madryn in the meantime, English is spoken at many tourist providers. Tourist information is available in the bus station and on the Rambla (a park-like part of the central Costanera).

Practical advice

trips

Puerto Madryn is the starting point for almost all tours on the Peninsula Valdés with their abundant wildlife. However, you can easily visit the largest penguin colony in South America Punta Tombo - if you do not have your own car, however, it is advisable to go on an excursion to Trelew to book as it is more expensive from Puerto Madryn.
