The small town Puerto Santa Cruz lies in the central part of the Santa Cruz Province in the Argentine part of Patagonia near the Atlantic coast. It has about 4,000 inhabitants and was until the establishment of Río Gallegos Capital of the former national territory of Santa Cruz.
For a long time the city was a little-noticed stopover in the wasteland of the Patagonian steppe. Only since 2004 directly south of the city of Monte León National Park was founded and its administration was set up in Puerto Santa Cruz, its tourist importance began to grow somewhat.
background
The city was founded in 1908, making it the oldest city in today's Santa Cruz Province. It serves as a supply center for the surrounding estancias, which mainly breed sheep.
The city is not located directly on the Atlantic coast, but 15 km inland on the wide estuary of the river Santa Cruz River. The modern ocean-going port is located directly on the Atlantic Punta Quilla.

trips
- Monte León National Park. The park, founded in 2004, has something to offer especially to fans of the Patagonian coastal fauna. There is a penguin colony, where around 150,000 animals stayed between September and April, a sea lion colony and numerous bird species. The rock formations created by erosion on the steep coast give the place its own character.
