Puerto del Rosario is the island capital of Fuerteventura. Around 30,000 people live in the port city on the east bank of the island, around a third of the entire population of Fuerteventura. The city is the cultural and economic center of the island, but it is of little interest to tourists.

background

The city was founded around 1795. At that time the place was called Puerto de Cabras, "Goat Harbor". This very prosaic name was abandoned in 1957 in favor of the better-sounding one Puerto del Rosario, "Port of the Madonna of the Rosary", this name refers to a church in the center of the city. In the 19th century, the port was an important hub for quick lime and in particular the dye "carmine", which was extracted in the vicinity of the city. Puerto del Rosario became the largest town on the island and finally the island's capital in 1860.

The municipality of Puerto is almost 300 km² and extends from the east coast of the island to the west coast. There are a number of places in this area, but they are mostly quite small. The biggest of these is El Matorral right next to the airport, worth mentioning Casillas del Angel, Tetir as Puerto Lajas.

Iberia offers scheduled flights to Spain, Binter canarias flies to the other Canary Islands and West Africa. Most tourists are transported by the tour operator's buses, there are only a few public bus connections.
