The Forêt classee et Ranch de Gibier de Nazinga is a national park in Burkina Faso.

background

history

The park was founded in 1979 by the Canadian brothers Robert and Clark Lungren. The two grew up in Burkina Faso and experienced how mismanagement, clearing of the forest, overgrazing and poaching together with recurring periods of drought led to devastating famines. They recognized that sustainable management can save both people from famine and animals from extinction. With the support of the population, they laid 600 km of slopes through the area and built dikes. Locals were hired as game rangers to maintain the animal population. Hunting and fishing were allowed to a controlled extent. This also brought in the financial resources for the project. The success was so great that the brothers were eventually forced out of the project and it has been under state control ever since.[1]The park has been expanded several times since then.

landscape

Climatically, the park is in the Sudan zone with precipitation in the range between 600 mm and 1000 mm per year. The savannah landscape is characterized by acacia and thorn plants. The density of trees increases towards the south and forms occasional groves, forests and gallery forests along the rivers.

Flora and fauna

The shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa, also Shea nut tree) and the baobab (Adansonia digitata, also Baobab tree) are the most important tree species in the park[2]. You can also find the trees called Néré.
