Cycling on Rügen - Radfahren auf Rügen

Cycling on to reprimand is recommended - provided you know the right ways.

With the pedelec against the wind?

In the meantime, you can rent the popular, electrically assisted bikes with up to 25 km / h from many bike rentals on the island. The daily rental price is usually around € 20.
Danger: Make sure you get a briefing on the bike from the rental company. A heavier Pedelec with an empty battery is twice as difficult to drive! It is essential to ask about the battery range and plan the tours in terms of kilometers so that there is still enough energy reserve in the battery as security (an empty pedelec is twice as difficult to drive!). As a rule, the electrically assisted wheels also have various types of support such as. B. ECO, standard and power mode. In the beginning, it is best to save electricity and only use the most necessary support (e.g. on a hill or in strong headwinds).

Towards the end of the tour, if you are already tired, you can "relish" empty the battery in power mode.

However, especially for shorter distances within a radius of 10 to 20 km from the accommodation, it is definitely advisable to include the bicycle as an inexpensive, healthy alternative in the trip planning. Those who are very sporty can of course also complete 100 to 150 km excursions by bike.

But be careful: don't underestimate the wind! Rügen is also partly hilly.

Network of cycle routes on Rügen

Unfortunately the island still owns no area-wide network of cycle routes. Unfortunately, there are still problems closing gaps at key points or on key routes. It can therefore be the case that a good, developed, direct route is still missing on the route that you personally would like to cycle. However, these problem areas have to be resolved continuously (e.g. by building cycle paths along the road). In some cases, however, many attractive routes away from the roads on the coasts as well as in forests and meadows are being developed as replacements. On these routes away from the noise of traffic, cycling is of course much more fun. Most of the dangerous road sections can usually be bypassed with detours.

Attention: Unfortunately, many cycle route maps show some of the dangerous routes that must be avoided at all costs as bridging gaps in the map network. Under no circumstances should you follow the shortest route on the map here, but rather look for safe alternative routes here. Often these more scenic detours also lead past sights that you might otherwise have driven past. Sometimes you have to accept poorer road surfaces. An example is the section of the Rügener Radrundweg between Altefähr and Rambin over the Selliner Haken, including the through-town in Altefähr. But these surface problems are also gradually being tackled structurally. So there is still a lot to be improved. Rügen is just a big island.

New cycle route guidance:Until 2014, Rügen did not have a comprehensive, systematic cycle route signposting "from a single source". According to a press release in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania government portal from spring 2014, a uniform signposting system for cycling and hiking trails has been created across the entire island (info). Nevertheless, it is of course still useful to have a cycling map with you.

Standard-compliant signposting of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route above Vitt.

List of busy roads with no cycle path

Here is a list dangerous, heavily traveled road sectionsthat you should avoid as a cyclist in the season if possible. Attention: z. Some of the routes are in cycle touring maps shown grossly incorrect (as a recommended route or roads with only moderate traffic). For this comprehensive list, the current traffic volume map was compared with OpenStreetMap. [1]

  • B 96 Samtens - Bergen (including the east bypass Bergen): That you cycle this route should absolutely avoid in principle arises by itself. Route extensive south via Garz and Putbus (significantly longer but very attractive for tourists) or alternatively bypass north via Güttin. The section of the former B 96 between Altefähr and Samtens has now been given an asphalt bike path. This is not particularly attractive because of its route next to the old federal road and the neighboring new federal road, but it is safe and you can get ahead quickly. The transition from Stralsund at the end of the Rügen dam to the cycle paths on the island is a bit confusing.
  • B 96 Sagard - Sassnitz: absolutely avoid, as it is very dangerous! The parallel route in the railway area to the north is no longer continuously drivable! This is a bug in many cycling maps. For more information, see here in the article Sassnitz
  • 1 Cycle path gap B 196 Zirkow - Serams (4 km, absolutely avoid) The bike path along the B 96 towards Göhren has a gap for almost 4 km. Avoid closing the gap! The route from Bergen on the route towards Southeast Rügen is best bypassing a large area via Putbus and the attractive route at the Greifwalder Bodden via Groß-Stresow.
  • L 303 Sassnitz - Hagen: The country road im Jasmund National Park is very busy as the entrance to the Königsstuhl (Hagen large car park). Avoid the route if possible. East of the highway (near 2 Cycle route Sassnitz - Königsstuhl (newly expanded to 12 km) ) there has been a newly developed, traffic-free alternative route in the national park since spring 2019. Due to its location in the national park, the 2 m wide route, according to Opensstreetmap, is made of a water-permeable special concrete. Attention: It is essential to concentrate on oncoming traffic here! 2 m width is actually too narrow for safe oncoming traffic - especially since the route has curves and inclines according to the map (the "technical regulations" ERA provides a minimum width of 2.5 m for independently guided two-way cycle paths.) From this minimum, oncoming traffic is relaxed and safe. By the way, cycling is not permitted on the high bank path on the chalk coast.
  • 1 L 293 Landstrasse Karow - Prora (6 km, very busy)
  • L 30 Glowe - Bobbin - Sagard about 8.5 km: To the east there is a safe and scenic route to Glowe via Polchow and the dam path "Mittelseebrücke" (partly bumpy gravel path, but the beautiful view of the Bodden makes up for it) for this).
  • L 30 / L 303 Glowe - Nardevitz - Hagen over around 9 km: safe, easy to drive and always more attractive alternative route: Glowe - Dammweg "Mittelseebrücke" - Spyker Castle - cycle path on the road to Neddevitz (chalk museum) - small side streets to Nardevitz - agricultural path after Nipmerow until shortly from Hagen.
  • Main road Altenkirchen - Putgarden for about 6 km: east of the narrow road there is a much nicer scenic and largely traffic-free alternative route - namely the well-developed high bank path via Nobbin to Vitt or Cape Arkona.
  • L30 / L301 Trent - Bergen over about 15 km: unfortunately this is the most suitable feeder route to the ferry to Hiddensee from Schaprode, even from the south. An alternative between Silenz and Trent can only be found with long detours and unpaved, unmarked paths.
  • L 29 (Deutsche Alleenstraße) from Rügen dam via Poseritz - Garz to Kasnevitz before Putbus for about 21 km: Use the signposted Rügen circular route / Baltic Sea Cycle Route between Altefähr and Putbus.
  • L 29 (Deutsche Alleenstraße) from Putbus to the branch on the B 196 east of Serams over 9 km: Here in the direction of southeast Rügen use the route south along the Bodden via Lauterbach - Urwald Goor and Groß-Stresow.
  • L 30 Samtens - Gingst - Kluis for around 16 km

Tour suggestions

  • Route tour Sassnitz - Cape Arkona: nice route tour with about 40-45 km easy. The return journey is possible by bus with a bicycle trailer. Sassnitz - Mukran (bypassing the dangerous federal road Sagard-Sassnitz) - beautiful landscape along the bay via Polche to Glowe (partly bumpy gravel roads) - bike path on the Schaabe to Juliusruh (in the area of the country road, but partly a bit separated from the road in the forest, so that the traffic noise is kept within limits) - From Juiusruh a well-developed high bank path via Vitte to Cape Arkona. Bus return possible from the Kap Arkona large car park.
  • Route tour Sassnitz - southeast ridge
  • Around the small Jasmunder Bodden with Greifswalder Bodden
  • Around the Great Jasmunder Bodden
  • Round trip south-east Rügen

literature

As a holiday region, there are numerous cycling and hiking maps of the island. Almost all well-known publishers that are active in this regard have a corresponding card in their program. For an overview of the publishers who issue cycling maps, see the topic article "Radwanderliteratur Germany-wide - publisher overview".
