To know
Recoleta is an upmarket residential neighborhood located between center and the neighborhood of Palermo. It is an area of tourist interest, nicknamed the "Paris of Argentina" due to the great French immigration since 1840. It is most famous for its monumental cemetery and the Recoleta Cultural Center.
Background
The name of the district derives from an early 18th century convent founded by the Recoletos Fathers, originally from France and members of the Franciscan Order. The convent and the adjoining church dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar are now located inside the monumental cemetery.
At the end of the nineteenth century the town attracted wealthy families based in the southern districts of the center who were seeking escape from the yellow fever epidemic that had struck the city. Being located at a higher altitude, Recoleta was less infested with mosquitoes carrying the terrible disease.
Since then Recoleta has been one of the most elegant neighborhoods in Buenos Aires as evidenced by its sumptuous Art Nouveau buildings. Many of the buildings built beginning in the 1870s were demolished a century later to make way for modern multi-story apartment buildings. Only the buildings used as embassies or luxury hotels have been saved from the bulldozers.
Together with the neighboring neighborhoods of Retiro and Palermo, Recoleta is part of the area known informally as "Barrio Norte", traditionally the place of residence of high-income social classes. Barrio Norte also concentrates a large number of restaurants and clubs of all kinds aimed at satisfying the refined tastes of its residents.
