The Republic of the Seas (in Russian: Республика Марий Эл transliterated: Respublika Marij El; in seas: Марий Эл Республика Marij El Respublika) is a Republic of the Russian Federation. It is also known as Mari El or Marelia.
Geographical notes
The Republic of the Seas is located in the eastern part of the Eastern European Lowland in the Russian Federation, along the Volga River. The territory is almost entirely flat and extends north of the middle course of the Volga. About 57% of the territory of the republic is covered with forests.
Spoken languages
The Russian it is the official language and is known by all; however, more than half of the population speaks a second language as mother tongue which can be Tatar or Mari depending on the area. Furthermore, many understand the languages of neighboring populations (Ukrainian, Uzbek, Azerbaijani, Chuvash, etc.)

Urban centers
- Yoshkar-Ola (Йошкар-Ола) - Capital of the Republic and almost the only established tourist destination. The city is a real treasure trove of works of art, architecture, green areas and cultural parks. It also has five theaters, an art school, a music school, multiplex cinema, museums, two ice rinks and two sports complexes. Its name means "red city" in the local language.
- Koz'modem'yansk (Козьмодемьянск) - The city is known for its museums. A museum opened in 1919 contains many Russian paintings. A regional museum for cultural conservation was inaugurated in 1979. The Ethnographic Open Air Museum was inaugurated in 1983. The latter comprises sixty different buildings and more than 2000 exhibits.
