Rio de Janeiro is the smallest state in the region Southeast of Brazil, occupying a total area of 43,781.5 km². It has more than 16 million inhabitants (8% of the Brazilian population, behind only São Paulo and Minas Gerais) in 2016. Its limits are the states ofMinas Gerais (north and northwest),Holy Spirit (northeast) andSão Paulo (southwest) beyond the Atlantic Ocean (east and south).
