The municipality of Rivière-au-Tonnerre is in fact made up of two villages located on the North Coast from the St. Lawrence River: Sheldrake and Rivière-au-Tonnerre. The name of the place comes from a natural phenomenon where, the Tonnerre river, is on a series of waterfalls of about 50 m whose crash recalls the sound of thunder. In addition, in the past, the place was nicknamed “Boom Boom River”. Together, in 2016, the villages have a total population of less than 300 inhabitants.

Story

The first settlers to settle there permanently arrived around 1853 or 1854 and founded Sheldrake and Rivière-au-Tonnerre as fishing villages. In 1875 more settlers arrived. They mostly came from Paspebiac in Gaspesie. In 1890, the post office opened in Rivière-au-Tonnerre, but it bore the name English of Thunder River. The name was francized in 1933.
