Unlike the Langhe, the orography of the Roero is very articulated with modest reliefs that sometimes drop sheer to create particular conformations called "Le Rocche". This unique natural environment in the world and the culture that has developed here has made the wine landscapes of the Roero, together with those of the Langhe he was born in Monferrato, World Heritage of Humanity in 2014.
Geographical notes
The Roero has a total area of 417.23 square km and is all located on the left bank of the Tanaro river. Beyond this river, on its hydrographic right, the territory of the Langhe. Therefore the Tanaro river forms the border between Roero and Langhe. While most of the Roero belongs to the catchment area of the Tanaro, the waters of the area facing the Carmagnola plain are conveyed into the Po by the Meletta and its tributaries.
The Roero area is mainly hilly and is mainly cultivated with fruit trees and vineyards. The Rocche del Roero, on which castles and villages have been built, constitute a peculiar feature of the landscape.
Background
An area already inhabited in Roman times, due to the flourishing viticulture planted here, the Roero is however a land divided between the different factions operating in Piedmont in the Middle Ages.
The Aleramici, who in these lands clashed with the troops of Asti ed Alexandria, they owned some castles scattered on the fortresses. The Aleramic branch of the Marquises of Saluzzo also had outposts in the area.
The history of the Roero is connected with the history of the Casane Asti who dominated these fortresses and imposed their name on this territory. Within these casane, particular influence had the family that gave the area its name, the original Asti Roero family.
