Story

The name of Roman Païs is very old and in common use from the 12the century. It is not at all related to the presence of Romanesque constructions in the region, but owes its name to the Romance language (derived from the Latin of Rome) which was practiced in this southern region of the Duchy of Brabant as opposed to the Germanic language practiced by its northern population.

The former Duchy of Brabant extended from 'S-Hertogenbosch To Nivelles. Almost 90% of its territory and its population were of Germanic origin. Only the small Romanesque part of the Duchy, in the far south, was called Roman Païs de Brabant. It roughly corresponded to the western two-thirds of the present Province of Walloon Brabant.

The principal officer of the Duke of Brabant did justice there on behalf of his master. He bore the title of "Grand Bailli du Roman Païs" and held his court in Genappe.
