- Former kaolin operations Old road of Braine-le-Comte
free. – Along the old road to Braine-le-Comte, there are two places where you can see ancient deposits of kaolin. Near the junction with the Chemin du Grand Bailli, one can see in the embankment an outcrop and the entrance to a gallery which was, between 1859 and 1911, an underground exploitation of this rock of magmatic origin and clay. from the decomposition of eurite (a variety of very fine-grained porphyry). Please note, the site is not secure! Where the Ri Fontaine du Sépulcre passes under the old road to Braine-Le-Comte, the Godin ponds have taken the place of eurite quarries operated from 1887 to 1939. Unfortunately, this site is only visible from the road because located in private property. The extracted materials were widely used by the Royal Boch earthenware factory and the ceramics center. Keramis To The louvière has, in its collections, many pieces and documents dealing with the subject.
Events
-
Sunday March 6, 2022 weekend. – The Nivelles carnival is one of the most important in Brabant Wallon, it is also the oldest. It started a little before the 1900s. It is known thanks to its Nivellois giants Argayon, Argayonne and Lolo as well as to its companies of gilles. This carnival takes place over 4 days, during the Brandons weekend. The soumonces are very important, 30 days before the carnival, we can already hear the sound of the batteries strolling in the streets of Nivelles creating a festive atmosphere. There are 11 gilles companies, more than 600 gilles and an impressive cavalcade that takes part in this Carnival. The cavalcade is made up of many groups of tanks. These gilles respect ancestral traditions by starting at dawn on Sunday morning until late at night. During this long day, they accompany the procession during the afternoon. Monday is the carnival of the schools followed by a rondeau des gilles and the burning of bumps. Orange throws (around 50 tonnes of oranges) are part of the game, as well as a fair that takes place on the Grand-Place in Nivelles. Activities for young and old will be present.
