Rosso (also: al-Quwārib القوارب) is a border town on the Senegal River, one of which is in Mauritania, the other in Senegal lies.

background

Here is the main border crossing between the two countries. There is a ferry service and small native boats.

Hardly any of the natives of the region speak French; Hassania Arabic is common, Pulaar and Wolof. About 16,000 people live on the Mauritanian side and around 10,000 on the Senegalese side.

getting there

The ferry "Rosso."

Mauritanian visas are available at the border in 2018. The corresponding office is right next to the gate. Under no circumstances should you hand over your passport to any “official” on the ferry. The clearance can be harassing. 3-4 hours should be allowed for at least for the transition, drivers more likely six. Bribes are often requested (on both sides). Numerous smugglers offer themselves, robberies and thefts, also on the ferry, which is free for pedestrians, occur frequently.

(The departure to Senegal over the ninety kilometers away Diama dam should cause fewer problems.)

By plane

The Senegalese Richard Toll Airport is not served commercially.

In the street

N2 north to the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott. In Senegal, this is the first road to follow Saint-Louis. To Dakar it's 365 km.
