background

This map from 1942 shows the three parts of the old town of St. Loius in Senegal.

The place was opened in 1659 for the Senegal Company founded. The island lying in the river under Louis XIV. Was developed into a fortress (Ile de Saint-Louis). It was then from 1872-1957 the seat of the French administration of the colony, here in ville is the most touristically interesting part of the city that is based on WolofNdar called. St. Louis was one of the four quatre communes, who from 1848 together put a representative in the Paris National Assembly, even if the native ones originaires only really received full citizenship in 1916.

On the sea side of the lagoon formed by the river Langue de Barberie is the quarter Guet n'dar; here are the beaches. The native settlement is overpopulated because of the narrowness and the hygienic conditions are poorer than elsewhere in Africa.

The area on the mainland with the district is more modern Sor.

As the animation shows, tidal currents widened this to 300 m in a few months, which then expanded to eight hundred. Due to the expected rise in sea level due to global warming, it can now be assumed that St. Louis will be flooded during floods.
