Roussillon is a place in French Department Vaucluse in the Provencewhich became famous for ocher mining.

background

Roussillon was the center of ocher mining until the 19th century, which made it very popular. Ocher was extracted here as early as Roman times. The industrial mining of ocher and the extraction of the ocher pigment on a large scale began in the 18th century. Around 1930, around a thousand people were still employed in the superstructure, but today it is only of historical importance, but the ocher hues still determine the appearance of the picturesque village, which sits enthroned on the ocher cliffs.

The place is now one of the most beautiful villages in France and received a corresponding award (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France). The place is thus saved from architectural sins and, on the other hand, there is a lively influx of tourists.
