Butter market and waterfall

In the Middle Ages, the Leuk brook was deliberately led through the city using canals so that it could finally plunge 17 m down a ridge. Among other things, the Hackenberger Mühle was built there, which contributed to the city's economic boom. Today the cafes, restaurants and ice cream parlors line up on the butter market next to the canal in the upper town. The square ends with the waterfall. From there you can see the lower town with the mill and the Saar.

Bell foundry Mabilon

Not far from the banks of the Saar at the foot of the Saarburg is the former Mabilon bell foundry, which is now a museum with an attached café. The foundry looks back on almost 300 years of history and manufactured, for example, the bells installed in the Evangelical Church in Saarburg.

Practical advice

trips

  • 2  Great Saar loop. Large Saar loop in the Wikipedia encyclopediaGroße Saarschleife in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsGreat Saar Loop (Q452165) in the Wikidata database.Starting from Mettlach train station, follow the signs to the Villeroy & Boch Ceramic Museum, leave it on the left and cross the Saar on a road bridge (Von-Boch-Liebig-Straße). Now keep to the left immediately after the bridge and follow the street (Oktavienstraße, becomes a path at the Mettlach barrage), always along the banks of the Saar. After approx. 5 km - approximately when you reach the apex of the Saarschleife - follow the signs for a hiking trail "Traumschleife", which leads in serpentines with a steep incline up to the "Cloef" lookout point. From there you have a fantastic view over the Saar loop. Alternatively, you can follow the Mettlacher Brücke from the "Saar-Hunsrück-Steig", which also runs over Cloef. If your legs then get heavy, you can take an Orscholz taxi, for example, back to Mettlach train station (costs approx. EUR 18), Taxi Schwarz, Mettlach-Orscholz, Tel. 06865-248.
