The city has about 15,000 inhabitants and is known for its large basilica. This basilica is dedicated to Mary Magdalene, who is said to have resided for a while in a cave near the town, where her tomb is now located.

Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume is best reached via the A8. Take exit 34, called Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume-Auriol.
Other through roads leading to Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume are the N7, the D560 and the D3.
By train
Saint-Maximin-la-Saint-Baume has a train station, but there are currently no active scheduled services to the station. Instead you can go to one of the two train stations of Aix-en-Provence and from there take a bus to Saint-Maximin-la-Saint-Baume.
