Samar is a kibbutz in the southern Arava.
background
Samar is a small kibbutz that was founded in 1976 and is located north of Eilat in the Arava. In contrast to other kibbutzim, the residents of Samar continue to live according to the socialist ideals of the original kibbutz movement. All members have equal rights, regardless of their professional activity, they bring their income into the kibbutz's coffers and can obtain the financial means for their personal needs. Important decisions are made by the kibbutz members in democratic votes.
The kibbutz cultivates dates organically; In addition to working in the kibbutz, the members should have enough time to pursue hobbies and artistic activities.
getting there
By plane
Most travelers from abroad reach Israel via the Ben Gurion Airport(IATA: TLV) . The journey from Eilat from, the previous city airport Eilat is served by charter airlines; the new one is even closer (at the height of Timna) Ramon Airport Eilat Airport
(IATA: ETM) , which should start operations at the end of 2017, but the opening is currently taking a long time. Until then, the journey is over Eilat-Ovda Airport(IATA: VDA) possible. Now closed as Ramon Airport opened in 2019.
By train / bus
There is no railway connection to the Arava, the nearest railway station is that of Dimona, the continuation of the railway line through the Arava until after Eilat has been in the planning for some time.
The bus routes of the Egged between Tel Aviv (394), Be'er Sheva (397), Jerusalem (444) and Eilat, which run through the Arava, stop at the junctions on road 90.
In the street

- 3 Samar Desert Kite : West of Samar there are two Desert kites (w: desert dragons); More than a hundred meters long heaped stone walls run towards each other like an arrowhead in a valley floor. The Stone Age buildings were probably used to hunt desert gazelles, which could be driven in and hunted down at the narrow point. The structures were already described by T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) and by British military pilots during the mandate, but their purpose remained unclear for a long time.
- 4 Petroglyphs : In the sandstone in the Wadi Odem west of Kibbutz Samar there are rock carvings depicting hunting scenes, camels and symbols with an as yet unclear meaning.
