Samos (island) - Samo (isola)

Samo (Σάμος or Samos) it's an island Greek ofNorthern Aegean.

To know

An island renowned for its "green" landscapes before the raging fires of the last decade of the twentieth century which reduced it to ashes;

Today Samo is mainly frequented by northern European tourists from the small and middle class.

When to go

Panorama of Vathy, the island's capital

Summer is the best time to visit Samos but you will have to deal with the wind that often furiously sweeps the towns of the northern coast with the exception of the capital located in a deep bay. The resorts on the south coast (Pythagoreion) are safe from it.

If you can, avoid August, the overcrowded month

Territories and tourist destinations

Urban centers

  • Karlovasi - Village on the north west coast a bit spooky when the sun is not there or the wind blows.
  • Marathokambos - Traditional village and seaside resort on the south west coast.
  • Pythagoreion - Once a poor fishing village, Pythagoreion is now a very popular seaside resort and renowned tourist port, favored in this by its proximity to the international airport and the archaeological site of Heraion, a place dedicated to the cult of Hera (corresponding to the Latin Juno). The site is on the list UNESCO of the World Heritage Sites.
  • Vathy - The capital which, as the name suggests (deep), is located in an articulated inlet on the northern coast.

Other destinations

  • Avlakia
  • Ammos crisis - Beach on the south coast between Kampos and Limnionas.
  • Gagou beach
  • Kerveli beach
  • Lemonakia
  • Megalo and Mikro Seitani - Two beautiful beaches 5 km from Karlovassi.
  • Psilì Ammos - Samos beach closest to the Turkish coast.
  • Tsamadou
  • Tsopela - The beach at the southernmost point of Samos. While being reachable from Pythagoreion by sea it is very isolated.

How to get

How to get around

The ideal is to rent a small car that allows you to travel, in addition to the connecting roads between the various countries, also the internal roads that have remained rather narrow. It should be borne in mind that the driving of the local population is rather uninhibited (the tiny chapels positioned along the carriageway on columns are nothing more than memories of the deceased following road accidents): for this reason, caution is highly recommended.
