To know

Background

The town is of feudal origin dating back to the seventeenth century and belonging to the fief of Roccella.

It began to exist with its present name starting from 1628, as a fief of the Pagano family who bought it from the Marquis of Roccella.

In 1631 the fiefdom of Santa Domenica Vittoria was incorporated into the territories of Porritto, Pozzoleo, Juncarà Soprano with the Villano estate. After numerous passages and a long series of marriages and bequests, the heir, Vittoria di Giovanni, married Domenico Alliata, prince of Villafranca and governor of Messina.

This last marriage had a particular concern in the development of the town in 1776 the transformation of the original "Chapel" into a "Sacramental Church" (Parish of Sant'Antonio Abate), was endowed with a new construction of a baptismal font with the coat of arms of his family which is the oldest object that the church preserves, with various furnishings from the 1700s. For the works carried out on the church, the names of Domenico Alliata and Vittoria di Giovanni were associated with that of Santa Domenica Vittoria from 1864 onwards.

Events and parties

  • Blessing of the cattle. Simple icon time.svgJanuary 17.
  • Holy Sunday, Virgin and Martyr. Simple icon time.svgLast Sunday of August. The feast of Santa Domenica, Vergine and Martire, begins with the collection of offerings for the whole town, which according to tradition consist of food (food and drink) and toys (handcrafted toys), accompanied by the musical band. At the same time, the square is set up for the party with popular entertainments involving young and old such as traditional dances and the "pot breaker" a sort of traditional game for children that involves choosing a vase and breaking it with a wooden club inside which you find a toy (toys collected during the offerings) as a surprise. After all the preparations have been completed, the party begins in the square. When the time for the evening celebration arrives, the party stops and the citizens gather in the church where they listen to mass; after the celebration, the citizens take the Saint and begin the "Procession of the Vara" in the square and through the streets of the town and with the continuation of the festival (stop for the celebration and then resume with the exit of the Saint). Late in the evening the return to the church of the Saint is greeted with the song of praise "Viva Santa Domenica" and by a fireworks display that marks the end of the party. In the square the celebrations and dances continue until late at night.
Feast of the patron saint Sant'Antonio Abate
  • Sant'Antonio Abate. Simple icon time.svg1st Sunday of September. On the occasion of the feast of the patron saint (Sant'Antonio Abate), after the celebration the citizens take the saint with the song of praise "Viva Sant'Antonio" and begin the "Procession of the Vara" through the streets of the town. Citizens dressed in white with a white wool belt with three knots, called "Devotees", praise the saint, which they carry on their shoulders throughout the day, taking turns to ensure the continuation of the festival. Tradition provides that the saint stops at each citizen's home, where the residents of the house make an offering to the saint which consists of an animal (sheep, pig or veal), or in foodstuffs (flour, vegetables or meat) or in material goods (clothes, various objects or money). Then the youngest children of the family who gave the offering are raised by the "Devotees" and are approached to the saint as if to receive a kiss from him, which in tradition means giving health and well-being to the children. In the middle of the day the "Devotees" bring the saint back to the church where he is raised three times with the song of praise, and then make him go out again to continue the tour through the streets of the town. At sunset, the "Devotees" bring the saint back into the church where he is relocated behind the altar with the song of praise. After this a short celebration begins, to officially start the party in the square. The tradition includes music and dancing and the consumption of various foods with the typical games to entertain children and adolescents.
