Sarre-Union is a town in the region Alsace.
Understand
The municipality is the reunion in 1794 of two former municipalities, Bouquenom (Bockenheim) and Ville-Neuve de Sarrewerden (Neu-Saarwerden), on both sides of the Saar; the revolutionary period of the National Convention earned it its name of Saar-Union. Saar-Union was francized in Saar Union after the First World War.
When the last Count of Sarrewerden died, Bouquenom was given as a fief to the Count of Moers, then to the Count of Nassau-Saarbrücken (1554-1559), a supporter of Lutheranism and who introduced the Reformation. In 1629, Duke François II of Lorraine Takes possession of the city and re-establishes the Catholic religion there. The Thirty Years' War causes terrible devastation and the continual passages of troops devastate the whole region. Sarre-Union castle is destroyed. In 1697, Bouquenom and Sarrewerden were attached directly to Lorraine, the Nassau therefore decided to rebuild a new capital Neusarrewerden (La Ville Neuve). Bouquenom became French in 1766 on the death of the last Duke of Lorraine: Stanislas. In the county, Prince Louis of Nassau Saarbrücken succeeded his father Guillaume-Henri in 1768. To see
Sarre-Union still has a large old house with magnificent architecture (oriel windows, arches, etc.) and also houses dating from the Renaissance. There are several churches in the center of town: one Catholic, one Reformed, and a synagogue. Passing the Saar there is also the old mill and the Protestant church of Villeneuve, surrounded by several houses from the XVIIIe century. Hidden in an alley (direction Oermingen) there is also the old laundromat of the city.
