Saverne (Zabern in German, Zàwere in Alsatian) is a French commune, located in the department of Bas-Rhin and the region Alsace. Its inhabitants are called the Savernois.

Saverne is a town located 40 km north-west of Strasbourg. It is one of the sub-prefecture of the department of Bas-Rhin.

Understand

The oldest traces of civilization discovered in Saverne date from the first century BC. A Roman camp, "Tres Tabernae" (Three Taverns), of which a few rare vestiges remain (including some elements of reuse on a wall along the canal), was established on the site of an ancient Gallic city. Today the name of Saverne is only a linguistic evolution of the Roman name.

In medieval times, Saverne was an important crossing point between the Lorraine plateau and the Alsace plain, via the Lutzelbourg valley. This explains its development, but also the large number of medieval castles around. Saverne was also the seat of a bishopric, hence the presence of the Château des Rohan.
