During a pigeon hunt by British officers in the village of Dinshawai on June 13, 1906, a woman from the village was shot dead. One officer was killed in the ensuing clashes between the villagers and British officers. Thereupon the British Consul General left Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer (1841–1917), arrested 52 villagers and brought them before a military tribunal that sentenced four residents to death and had eight people flogged. Even if it was a relatively small event, it led to the founding of Egypt's first nationalist party and to a heightened reputation among the Egyptian peasantry.
