trips

Geotopes and Magdalena Chapel

The parking lot at the Schönsee moor bath can serve as a starting point for excursions to the 836 m high Drechselberg. From the parking lot, a narrow path leads up the western slope of the Drechselberg. He is accompanied by stations of the cross to the Magdalenenkapelle.

  • The Magdalena 2 , a chapel built in 1828 with a life-size figure of St. Magdalena, is located 750 m above sea level on the western slope of the Drechselberg.
  • Next to and above the Magdalenenkapelle is a geotope, the Magdalenafels. It is a gneiss nose with metamorphic structural elements. The rock shows foliation, separation into light and dark bands, folds, various inclusions and quartz crinkles.
  • If you continue north on the forest road below the Magdalena along the slope, you will reach the Geotope Steinfelsen after about 500 meters. 3 The stone rock is a gneiss rib that runs down the slope. It shows metamorphic rock with foliations.
  • If you can walk well, you can walk directly over the summit of the Drechselberg to the east to reach the town of Stadlern.
  • The Drechselberg can be easily circumnavigated by bike on the wide forest road.

Geotopes and Stückstein observation tower, wildlife park

At the eastern edge of Schönsee you drive north on the road St2154 towards Eslarn. After 4 km you will reach the parking lot at the Eslarn wildlife park, which offers a good starting point for various excursions:

  • The Eslarner Wildlife Park is located directly at the parking lot 4 . It is a game reserve that houses an elk, several wild boars, mouflons and waterfowl. A nature trail runs around the game reserve. There are playgrounds and viewing platforms close to the parking lot.
  • A path begins on the opposite side of the street from the parking lot, which leads to the summit of the Stückberg after an ascent of 180 meters. There is an observation tower on the 809 m high Stückberg 5 which offers a beautiful view over the Upper Palatinate Forest as far as the Czech Republic. It's always open. At the summit of the Stückberg you will find the Stückstein geotope, a gneiss rock with cm large garnet inclusions.
  • To the northeast of the summit is the Hutstein geotope 6 . It is a gneiss floe in the shape of a hat, also with cm large garnet inclusions.

Stadlern: high rocks, St. Mary's Church and Bohemian Forest Tower

To the east of Schönsee is the 836 m high Drechselberg. If you drive in an arc to the north via Dietersdorf or in an arc to the south via Weiding around the Drechselberg, you will reach the town of Stadlern after about 8 km.

  • In the southern part of Stadlern there is the remarkable pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary from the 14th century. 7
  • Opposite the church, a road branches off to the northeast in the direction of Waldhäuser. There is a parking lot for hikers 200 m behind the junction. This is the starting point for a hike over the Hochfels geotope 8 to the Reichenstein castle ruins 9 and to the Bohemian Forest Tower. 10
