In swahili, shimo means "cavity", "chasm". This name comes from the presence of a network of caves and caverns.

- 1 Slave caves (Slave Caves) Mon.- Sun. : 8 h 30 - 18 h. adult : 400 KES, less than 12 years : 30 KES. – For the record for music lovers, the British singer-songwriter, born in Kenya, Roger whittaker, mentioned them extensively in 1958 in his song Shimoni.
- Slavery Museum (Slavery Museum) – Built in 1885 and completely renovated during the first decade of the 2000s, the coral stone building was the first headquarters of the British Imperial East African Company.

- 3 Colonial cemetery (Colonial Cemetery) permanently accessible. free. – Located on the shore and protected from the sea by a low wall, this small cemetery contains several graves of unknown people. The only grave that attracts attention is that of Coral color, the captain of the British Rifle Brigade (Rifle Brigade) Frederick Eyre Lawrence killed in action against slavers on in Gasi, a coastal town located about twenty kilometers north of Shimoni.

It was abandoned, at an uncertain time but before the XVIIIe century, by the inhabitants following an invasion by pirates and rebuilt about a kilometer further east at the current location, presumably after having occupied the network of coral caves to protect themselves from the pirates. Last testimony of the occupation of the place, the ruins of a mosque. It also serves as a cemetery for the Muslim community.
