Sifnosa is one of the larger Cyclades islands with 74 km². It is about 15 km long and 7.5 km wide. The highest point on the island is the Profitis Elias at 682 m. Compared to its neighbors, the island is relatively green, and most of its inhabitants live from agriculture. Especially in the east and south you will find terraces with olives, almonds and grapes on the slopes.

The coasts are quite steep, most of the beaches are in bays.

Gold and silver were once mined on Sifnos, the island was considered rich. Natural resources were already exploited in ancient times. In the Middle Ages the island was owned by the Venetians and later by the Turks.

Alongside agriculture, tourism is the main economic factor. The island is also known for its pottery and basketry, but these professions only feed a few families.

Sifnos can only be reached by ship, there are good ferry connections to the neighboring islands Serifos, Milos and Paros as well as after Piraeus. There is no airport on the island.
