Silom (สีลม) is a set of districts of the city of Bangkok.
To know
Silom is the financial area of Bangkok, full of glittering skyscrapers that praise the name of financial institutions. However, the character of the area changes after dark: the small soi between Silom Road and Surawong Road come to life and fill with people coming out to relax and have fun. The red light district of Patpong it is a highly sought after place. The commercial district of Bang Rak (บางรัก) is found here hosting many luxury hotels.
Background
In the 19th century, daily life in Bangkok was concentrated mainly around the canals. Silom was a countryside full of rice plantations, orchids and windmills, cut by canals. During this era life and business were being done along the river which was seething with trade with European ships and convoys. This area, known as Bang Rak it still has a European feel to it with many colonial-style hotels and old abandoned warehouses. Silom, what does it mean windmill in Thai, it has changed immensely as it adapts to modern times. Charoen Krung Road (New Road) was the first paved road in Bangkok, built in 1861 during the reign of King Rama IV under the request of foreign consuls who wanted to travel comfortably on their horses and carriages. Over time, most of the canals have disappeared and turned into streets.
With Thailand's rise as a new industrialized economy, Silom has morphed into the country's main financial center with banking institutions, buildings soaring into the sky, and corporate-filled condos. Many banks, insurance companies, auditing firms and lawyers have also long focused Sathorn Road (ถนน สาทร). The district's importance as a business center has been solidified by the recent construction of the skytrain and metro that pass through it. However, their construction has not helped the traffic which continues to be clogged and a serious problem in the area. There isn't much to do here aside from when white-collar workers flock to the streets for lunch and the variety of faces makes this area a good place to see the world go by. Businessmen with cigars moving through masses of well-dressed secretaries, office workers and Western immigrants. Recently, many Indians and Muslims have begun to reside around the intersection with Charoen Krung Road.
Silom at night turns into the place to go. It is a neighborhood full of energy that becomes one of the most cosmopolitan places in the city and at the same time one of the most seedy. Soi Patpong created the stereotype of hedonistic Bangkok even if in reality they are only two little Soi. The "go-go bars" could also be called "brothels to take away", and a visit to the city is not complete without also passing through this surreal environment. If, on the other hand, you want something of a higher level, you always stay in this area. Silom is home to some of the most expensive hotels in the city aimed at wealthy visitors who meet to talk business over a glass of wine. Take a cocktail on Banyan Tree Building or the State Tower it also offers one of the most beautiful views in Southeast Asia.
How to orient yourself
Silom: full screen map.Finding your way here is very simple as everything happens on Silom Road, especially where it intersects with Rama IV Road. The area then tends to revive again as it approaches the river, in the area known as Bang Rak. Parallel to Silom Road are Sathorn Road to the south and Surawong Road to the north. With the redevelopment of Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Road as a tourist hub by building Mahankorn Pavilion, Cube, the W hotel and the rebirth of the Empire Tower, the area around the BTS and BRT Chong Nonsi station is increasingly known as SOLU (from South of Lumphini).

By public transport
Skytrain
Silom Road and Sathorn Road can be reached easily using the BTS skytrain line Silom Line. The BTS station Daeng room it is close to all the places where it is celebrated. On the other side is the station Saphan Taksin which is close to the hotels on the Bang Rak River. In between are the areas of Surasak is Chong Nonsi.
There is a direct connection to Siam Square, which takes about five minutes, but if you are coming from another district it could be a little more complicated. From Sukhumvit take the skytrain to Siam station and then change to the Silom Line. The same is true if you are coming from Phahonyothin
Underground
The MRT metro is a good way to reach Silom from Yaowarat and Phahurat, Sukhumvit and Ratchadaphisek. The central stop is the "Si Lom" MRT station which is located at the entrance to Lumphini Park. It can be used as an exchange station with the Sala Daeng BTS stop. Other stops include Lumphini, Sam Yan is Hua Lamphong. The ride between Sukhumvit and Hualamphong station takes about five minutes while from Ratchadaphisek it takes about ten to fifteen minutes. Trains run every five to ten minutes and cost between 16 and 41 baht.
If you are coming from Rattanakosin, Khao San Road or some areas of Yaowarat and Phahurat, the fastest way to reach Silom is by using the Chao Phraya Express Boat. A single ride from Chang wharf in Rattanakosin to Sathorn takes about 25 minutes and costs 18 baht. From here you can change to the Silom Line of the skytrain.
The ferry is also the best way to get around the Bang Rak area. Yes Phraya north of Bang Rak e Sathorn in the south they are served by fast ships with the yellow flag. Oriental it is the most central but is served only by ferries without flag or with the orange flag. The temple Wat Muang Kae it's north of Oriental, but it's a semi-desolate pier served only by flag-free ferries.
If you are in Thonburi (the area around Khlong San) you can easily take a ferry across the river. There are ferries from Klongsan to Si Phraya, from Wat Suwan to Oriental and from Sathorn you cross the river to the pier of the same name. The ferry leaves every 15 minutes and will cost no more than 3 baht.
On the train
The train station Hualamphong on the border with Yaowarat and Phahurat, it is very easy to reach: just take the metro to Hua Lamphong and the station is in front of the exit. from there you can take trains to many destinations, including Ayutthaya or Chiang Mai.
By bus
Due to the traffic and the complexity of the bus system, getting to Silom is only advisable if you have a lot of time or very little money. As part of the city center, there are many lines serving Silom but finding the right one is an adventure. The bus 15 ordinary and air-conditioned comes from Phra Athit Road and passes Ratchadamnoen Klang Road (for Khao San Road) passing along Lan Luang Road, Chakkaphatdi Phong Road and Bamrung Muang for Siam Square. From there continue along Ratchadamri Road and then continue all along Silom Road towards Charoen Krung Road, the Krung Thep Bridge and the Tha Phra Shopping Center in Thonburi.
From Yaowarat you take the bus 4 from Charoen Krung Road which travels along Rama IV Road, passing by Hualampong Station and the Queen Saovabha Institute Snake Farm before arriving at the intersection with Silom Road. In the opposite direction this bus skips Charoen Krung Road passing Yaowarat Road instead (because they are one way streets.)
The first line of the new buses Rapid Transit Bus (BRT) begins at the intersection of Sathorn Road and Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Road. There is a pedestrian bridge from Chong Nonsi BTS station to Sathorn BRT station which is the terminus. From there the line heads south along Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Road and then follows Rama III Road along the Chao Phraya River with final destination Ratchaphruek in Thonburi. As a commuter line it doesn't help much for foreign visitors unless you're headed to the Mambo Cabaret, the Tawandang Microbrewery, or a distant hotel.

What see
Traditional tourist attractions are rare in Silom. A very popular thing is to have a drink in one of the terraces-bars with spectacular views of the city skyline. You can also go to Lumphini Park or visit one of the two daily snake farm shows Queen Saovabha Institute Snake Farm.
See the city profile
Even if the skyline of the city is not like that of Hong Kong or New York, the view is still worth it. Most of the Silom towers are financial institutions and offices. The best way to see the view is to go to the Banyan Tree Hotel or to State Tower. The 61st floor of the Banyan Tree Hotel has the Vertigo and Moon Bar, where you can have dinner or a beer with one of the most spectacular views in Asia. Sirocco and Moon Bar on the State Tower it is also taller than the Vertigo making it the tallest terrace bar and restaurant in the world. Due to the slightly off-center location the view is not as beautiful even if you have a beautiful view of the Chao Phraya River.
Most of the buildings in Silom are offices that cannot be visited. Those interested in modern architecture might instead venture to observe the work of other architects. Noteworthy are the buildings CP Tower, Empire Tower, ITF Tower and the United Center Building. The Robot Building however, it is the strangest of all.
- 1 Robot Building (โร บอ ท บิ ว ดิ้ ง), 191 Sathorn Tai Road (BTS Surasak metro station). Probably a building that makes you smile because as the name suggests, it resembles a giant robot. Designed by Sumet Jumsai in the mid-1980s to reflect on the automation of the banking system. It is a strange building and Jumsai stated that it could be considered a reaction to the hyper-technological post modern buildings very common at the time. Antennas and eyes are not only for beauty but also have practical functions. Today the building is a bit retro, closed to the public and can be seen best by traveling on the BTS skytrain between Chong Nonsi and Sala Daeng.

Free. Located in front of Lumphini Park, it was sculpted by Professor Corrado Feroci, known in Thailand as Silpa Bhirasri. He and four other artists gave her the finishing touches on June 7, 1941 to be revealed on March 27, 1942. Inside there is a lake where you can rent boats with a cycle path that surrounds it and is very popular with enthusiasts of morning exercises, but during the day due to the heat it is not very busy. The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra performs here from time to time during the winter. There are also large lizards that spend most of their time in the water but it is not recommended to get too close as they may bite. - 4 Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute Snake Farm (สถานเสาวภา สภากาชาดไทย), 1874 Rama IV Road (Sala Daeng BTS station or Si Lom MRT), ☎ 66 2 252 0161. 200 baht. This institute contains a collection of venomous snakes which are milked daily to produce anti venom serum. Twice a day a poison extraction show is held in which the announcer tells about the poisonous snakes living in Thailand and what to do if you encounter one. The animals are professionally maintained and the show is in complete safety. A good opportunity to take a picture with a dangerous snake coiled around the neck.

Silom lacks the Buddhist temple overload common in other parts of the city. There are some interesting ones even if they are not inevitable. Due to the presence of the historic trading district, there are some European-style churches and old shopping malls to visit. In addition, the Hindu and Muslim population has built the most important Hindu temple in Thailand and various mosques on Silom Road.
- 5 Assumption Cathedral (อาสน วิหาร อัส สั ม ชั ญ), 23 Soi Oriental (Oriental Pier or BTS Saphan Taksin), ☎ 66 2 233 7120. Free. The Assumption Cathedral is the main church for Roman Catholics in Bangkok. The original building located here was built by the French missionary Father Pascal in 1809 and completed in 1821. Throughout the second half of the 19th century the area surrounding the church played an important role for French Christian missionaries arriving in Bangkok. It is close to the Oriental Hotel and the French Embassy in an area that somehow shows its Francophone past. The current church was rebuilt in Romanesque style around 1910, then heavily damaged during the bombings in World War II and finally restored. Its rectangular structure and the red bricks of the exterior make it stand out in comparison to the boring buildings around. The interior is very spacious with a very high ornate ceiling. Pope John Paul II visited in 1984, showing the importance of this church in the Roman Catholic community of Thailand. The only mass in English is held on Sunday at 10:00.
- 6 Church of Christ (ค ริ สต จักร), 11 Convent Road (Sala Daeng BTS station), ☎ 66 2 234 3634. Free. Mon-Fri 08: 30-16: 30, Masses Sun 07:30 and 10:00. The international English-speaking community that attends the church dates back to the 19th century, when the first Protestant missionaries arrived in Bangkok. At first the English Anglicans came to spread their belief but in the late 19th century most of the Protestant missionaries came from the United States. In 1861, King Rama IV permitted the construction of the Protestant Union Chapel on Charoen Krung Road, more commonly known as the English Church. With the spread of Protestantism there was a need for a larger church and in 1904 King Rama V allowed the construction of the Church of Christ on the condition that Protestants of all nationalities and sects could use it as a place of worship. Hard to believe today but at the time this area was an agricultural area full of canals and orchards. With the economic growth of the Silom area, today it is instead surrounded by offices and condominiums. Many Christian immigrants and locals gather here on Sunday to attend mass. It is a beautiful white church that is also interesting for the casual visitor. The interiors were renovated in 2008, as well as the colored windows from 1905.
- 7 Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple (วัด พระ ศรี มหา อุ มา เทวี), 2 Pan Road (Chong Nonsi BTS station), ☎ 66 2 238 4007. Free. Mon-Sun 06: 00-20: 00. One of the two Hindu temples in Bangkok and a good experience. Built in the 60s of the 19th century by Tamil immigrants and like any self-respecting temple in India it is unique, very colorful and adorned in the smallest detail. It is generally very popular with a constant flow of worshipers lighting incense sticks and with many ceremonies that follow one another. Besides the Indian visitors there are also Thais as the Buddha images are placed next to Hindu deities inside the temple. You cannot take pictures inside because we are in the holiest place in Bangkok for the Indian community.
- 8 Wat Hua Lamphong Temple (วัด หัวลำโพง), Rama IV Road (Sam Yan MRT station). Free. Rarely visited by foreigners, Wat Hua Lampong isn't all that noteworthy, but it is very popular and is a good insight into how the locals experience the religion. The temple was rebuilt in 1996 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) ascension to the throne. The decorations used throughout the temple consist of elephants and rows of umbrellas which signify that this is a royal temple. In the Hall of Ordinations, the viharn is unusual in that it is raised on a platform. There are many shrines inside the temple, one of which is dedicated to King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and another is dedicated to the Hindu deity Ganesha.
- 9 Wat Maha Phruettharam temple (วัด มหาพฤฒาราม), Maha Phruettharam Road (Si Phraya pier). Free. Mon-Sun 08: 00-18: 00. It is far off the beaten path when visiting this monastery but it is definitely something to see if you are interested in Buddhism. The exact origin of this temple is unknown, but it is believed to be from the early Rattanakosin era or the late Ayutthaya. It has had many names, but the definitive and current one obtained it during the reign of King Rama IV who restored it and elevated it to the status of a royal temple of the third degree. It extends over a vast perimeter and has a large internal courtyard. The wall paintings inside the ordination hall show a number of Buddhist pilgrims. The large reclining Buddha is well worth a visit. Thais lay small bills near the statue believing it to bring good luck.
- 10 Wat Yan Nawa temple (วัด ยานนาวา), 1648 Charoen Krung Road (Saphan Taksin BTS station or Sathorn pier), ☎ 66 2 211 9317. Free. Mon-Sun 05: 00-21: 00, bot Mon-Sun 08: 00-09: 00 and 17: 00-18: 00. This temple was built in the Ayutthaya period under the name of Wat Kok Khwai and was completely rebuilt by King Rama III in the early 19th century and renamed Wat Yan Nawa (ship temple). The main feature of this temple is its base, which is shaped like a Chinese junk with two pagodas forming the two trees. King Rama III saw that the steamboats were slowly replacing the old junks and wanted people to remember how much wealth they had brought to Siam. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Chinese began to move to the area and today this temple is very popular with the Chinese community that resides there.
Museums and art galleries
- 11 Bangkokian Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์ ชาว บางกอก), 273 Charoen Krung Soi 43 (Si Phraya pier), ☎ 66 2 233 7027. Free. Wed-Sun 10: 00-17: 00. This typically Thai-style wooden house was built in 1937 and was originally home to the Suravadee family and has been converted into a museum to give an insight into Bangkok's middle-class lifestyle during World War II and the 1950s. . On display are period objects, a kitchen, a bathroom and a dressing table used during the war. Part of the museum is dedicated to keeping the history of Bang Rak and Silom showing the farms, canals and mills that were characteristic of this area.
- 12 Kathmandu photo gallery, 87 Pan Road, 10500 (Chong Nonsi BTS station), ☎ 66 2 234 6700, @[email protected]. Free. Tue-Sun 11: 00-19: 00. Located in an old Portuguese shopping center which has now been refurbished, it is probably the only gallery in Bangkok dedicated solely to the art of photography. Owner Manit Sriwanichpoom has tried to keep the old-fashioned photo shops where customers carefully chose the prints for sale. The ground floor gallery has only owner works while upstairs there are changing exhibits. There is also a corner for books on photography.
- 13 Heritage house of M.R. Kukrit (บ้าน ซอย สวนพลู), 19 Soi Phra Phinit (Chong Nonsi BTS station), ☎ 66 2 286 8185. 50 baht. Sat-Sun 09: 30-17: 00. M.R. Kukrit Pramoj (1911-1995) was a prominent writer, university lecturer, statesman and Prime Minister of Thailand. His legacy is this complex of five houses built in teak that formed his home. An amazing example of Thai architecture with the oldest house dating back more than a hundred years ago. The surrounding garden plays an important role in the design of the property as the glue between the various buildings.
- 14 Neilson Hays Library and Galleries (ห้องสมุด เนีย ล สัน เฮ ส์), 195 Surawong Road (Chong Nonsi BTS station), ☎ 66 2 233 1731. 50 baht. Tue-Sun 09: 30-17: 00. A beautiful late 19th century European style building with a bookshop, two galleries, a creative workshop and a café. The bookshop has the largest collection of English-language books in Bangkok. The art galleries have paintings, photographs, textiles and ceramics on display, and many of the works are for sale. The café is open every day from 09: 00-18: 00 and has free Wi-Fi internet connection.

Free. Tue-Sun 10: 30-21: 00. The interior of Emporium, Bangkok's trendiest shopping mall, couldn't have been a better place. The TCDC, as Bangkokians like to call it, seeks to promote and showcase Thailand's design innovations. There is a permanent exhibition on the question "What is design and how is it influenced by factors such as society, history, politics, economics, geography and religion?". There are also temporary exhibitions. If you want to access the resource center and the library you can take a day pass but you can do it, for free, only once and you need a passport, otherwise you need to pay a subscription. We spend the day reading beautiful books on design or just surfing the internet.
Historical buildings
- 17 East Asiatic Company building (อาคาร บริษัท อีส ท์ เอเชีย ติก เก่า) (Oriental pier). On the bank of the Chao Phraya River is this Venetian-style building of the Danish East Asiatic Company which was built in 1901. A huge number of foreign merchant exchanges had to pass through this building before leaving for Europe. It is not open to the public.
- 18 Old Customs House (ศุลก สถาน), Charoen Krung Soi 36 (Oriental pier). This is where the port of Bangkok was located in the 19th century. Today it is a dilapidated building that needs a lot of refurbishment to return to being functional but it remains clear that the colonial style house was once the pride of the area. Built in the 1880s and used to apply import / export taxes to traders entering and leaving Siam. It is not open to the public but you can walk freely and get a feel for the atmosphere of early Bangkok. Here they shot the film In the Mood for Love by Wong Kar-wai.
What to do
Visited by many traveling businessmen, this area is great for upscale spas. Well known are there Devarana Spa (in the Hotel Dusit Thani) la Banyan Tree and the legendary Oriental, probably the most expensive in town, which also offers a six-hour package called Oriental Romance from the cost of 16,000 baht.

There is no need to speak Thai as the instructor seldom uses voice cues. As well as exercising it is a good way to meet the locals.

- 5 Joe Louis Traditional Thai Puppet Theater (นาฏย ศาลา หุ่น ละคร เล็), Asiatique The Riverfront, 2194 Charoen Krung Road (Saphan Taksin BTS station, then take the Asiatique ferry), ☎ 66 2 108 4000. 3,000 baht. Mon-Sun 19: 30-20: 45. The opening of this theater took place thanks to Sakhon Yangkhieosot, or Joe Louis, who wished to preserve the art of moving Hun Lakhon Lek puppets for which Khon interpretation skills are needed where the movement of the feet and hands coincides with that of the puppets. Each puppet is maneuvered by three puppeteers who give life to the object. Usually Hun Lakhon Lek stages the story of Ramakian, the Thai version of the epic Ramayana story. Sakhon Nattasin is currently the only company in Thailand to stage Hun Lakhon Lek puppets. The show is in Thai with English translation with moments in which the puppets interact with the audience. There is also a corner of the theater where Khon masks are made and an exhibition of puppets and their history. It is also a restaurant.
- 6 Mambo Cabaret (แม ม โบ้ คา บา เร่ ต์ โชว์), 59/28 Rama III Road (BRT Wat Darn station, between Rama III Soi 57 and 59), ☎ 66 2 294 7381. 1,000 baht. Shows Mon-Sun 19:15, 20:30, 22:00. She is rumored to be the queen of drag queens and this ladyboy show takes place three times a day and lasts an hour with all the glitz and glamor one would expect. One of the most famous Thai restaurant chains in the world. Prices are slightly higher compared to other schools but classes are held inside in the historic Blue Elephant restaurant and when you eat the dishes you have prepared you will be served wine, extra dishes and dessert. You will also come home with a Blue Elephant apron.

Cooking school hidden inside the alley and well marked by signs scattered along the route. Characteristic and Spartan environment at first glance which is instead rich in details. The groups are welcomed in the dining room by the chefs and introduced to the 5 different recipes that each student will cook (and then eat) which are then prepared in the adjoining kitchen rooms. The lesson lasts about three hours during which you will often be asked to wash your hands to maintain the cleanliness standards necessary for Thai cuisine. The courses are pleasant, simple and affordable for everyone and fun. At the end of the course a small book of recipes is given as a gift, also containing those cooked in the previous hours.

Shopping
Although at first glance Silom might seem a bit dull compared to Siam Square, with its sloppy malls which are still well stocked if you need anything. If you are looking for antiques, arts, crafts, silk and clothes Silom is the place, especially the Bang Rak area; hundreds of jewelers and silverware are lined up along Charoen Krung Road.
Antiques
Buying antiques is fun and statues, fabrics, inlaid woods and furniture could be an interesting subject. Beware though that some cultural objects need one export license if you want to take them home. Especially with images depicting the Buddha, those depicting Bodhisattvas or parts of ancient monuments or prehistoric objects. Ci sono molti piani con vari negozi che vendono antiquariato, moquette, decorazioni, artigianato, gioielleria, quadri, seta e molti altri oggetti culturali. Il terzo piano è una galleria di artigianato e manifatture. Il centro commerciale ha un'atmosfera d'alta classe, di conseguenza gli oggetti in vendita sono molto cari.

Il River City ha la migliore raccolta in città di antiquariato, arte, manifatture, vasellame, decorazioni, sculture e legni intarsiati. Sono oggetti originali, i prezzi lo dimostrano, che hanno bisogno della licenza d'esportazione e i negozianti vi aiuteranno con la documentazione ad un costo extra. Ogni primo Sabato del mese c'è un'asta di manufatti nell'auditorium River City. Un negozio interessante è "Old Maps & Prints" al quarto piano che vende vecchie mappe della Thailandia e del Sud Est Asia.

Presumibilmente l'ultimo villaggio Thailandese tradizionale su Silom Road, è costituito di 15 case in teak e tre edifici costruiti nel 1908. Il comprensorio è stato convertito in negozi, un ristorante e un albergo. È un mercato turistico a tema ma pur sempre un buon posto per i souvenir, borse, artigianato e arredamento ma fate attenzione che molti oggetti sono falsi o riproduzioni. L'albergo costa 1.100-3.500 baht a notte, ha delle stanze molto semplici in alcune delle quali l'odore è cattivo, senza colazione né Wi-Fi.

- 10 Asiatique The Riverfront, 2194 Charoen Krung Road (Stazione BTS Saphan Taksin, poi prendere il traghetto gratuito per l'Asiatique), ☎ 66 2 108 4488. Lun-Dom 17:00-00:00. Un nuovo mercato notturno e centro commerciale già nella lista tra i migliori posti per fare acquisti a Bangkok. Non è molto affollato con un buon mix tra stranieri e locali ed ha una gran varietà di cose in vendita. È una vasta area ed è divisa in quattro "distretti": il distretto Chareonkrung con oltre 1.000 negozietti, il distretto delle fabbriche per vestiti di livello più alto e gingilli, il distretto Waterfront per i ristoranti e il distretto Town per i bar e gli eventi all'aperto. Ospita inoltre il Calipso Cabaret e il Teatro Louis. Una volta quest'area era un quartiere di scambi internazionali e l'Asiatique si vanta di questo restando in tema XX secolo.

Un faro di economicità in mezzo ad alberghi di lusso a Bang Rak. In sostanza è un mercato dei fiori in vendita per tutte le occasioni e ad ogni prezzo. C'è una grande fornitura di orchidee e fiori recisi. Se si ha fame si può mangiare carne, pesce e frutta. Ci sono anche i soliti banchetti di vestiti.
- 12 Mercato Lalai Sap (ตลาดละลายทรัพย์), Silom Soi 5 (Stazione BTS Chong Nonsi), ☎ 66 2 231 2244. Lun-Ven 10:00-15:00. Il nome significa letteralmente "soldi che scompaiono" e questo mercato di strada provvede a sfamare le molte segretarie e impiegati di banca degli uffici ed edifici presenti nell'area ed è quindi anche un buon posto per il cibo di strada. Ci sono molte cose in vendita compresi indumenti e prodotti di igiene intima. I piccoli oggetti costano 50-100 baht. È molto frequentato attorno alle 13:00 quando i colletti bianchi fanno pausa pranzo quindi è meglio visitarlo a quell'ora. Nel pomeriggio si può provare la frutta e gli spuntini ai banchetti ambulanti e le sera preparano pesce.
- 13 Patpong Night Market (ตลาดกลางคืนพัฒน์พงษ์), Soi Patpong 1 (Stazione BTS Sala Daeng). Lun-Dom 18:00-01:00. Tra gli strip club e i bar lungo Soi Patpong si trova il mercato notturno Patpong, uno dei mercati più turistici di tutta Bangkok. Fu messo su negli anni '80 del secolo scorso come mercato delle pulci ed oggi è probabilmente il mercato più visitato (e il meno interessante) della città. Ospita molti banchetti che vendono prodotti contraffatti, orologi, vestiti, borse, e cosmetici oltre a prodotti turistici Thailandesi come modellini di tuk-tuk e pantaloncini da Muay Thai. I prezzi sono esorbitanti e chiunque abbia intenzione di comprare dovrà contrattare molto. Molti oggetti presenti qui sono anche presenti alla metà del prezzo in altri posti della città.

Central è sul retro del complesso ed è accessibile da ogni piano. Il piano superiore del Silom Complex ha un grande negozio di prodotti elettrici e un negozio di prodotti per l'ufficio.

La vita notturan di Silom non è solo a Patpong ma un visitatore non può dire di essere stato a Bangkok senza aver fatto almeno una puntata al 'Pong.
Soi Patpong

Prendete un bel respiro e buttatevi nella follia di Patpong (พัฒน์พงษ์) che di fatto consiste solo di due piccole Soi (Patpong 1 and Patpong 2). È vicino alla stazione BTS Sala Daeng, deserta di giorno ma di notte è piena di gente che va in tutte le direzioni. La moltitudine di turisti di mezza età che vanno a caccia di "sarong" e bastoncini per mangiare rende ancora più surreale il brulicare di spettacoli erotici che avvengono all'interno di ogni porta aperta.
Preparatevi ad essere imbarazzati da adescatori con 'menu' laminati di atti e posizioni che si possono ordinare. Se si seguono gli adescatori si finirà con lo spendere una fortuna in bevute per vedere spettacoli di ragazze tristi che performano atti non proprio igienici con vari accessori e giochi da giardino (freccette, ping pong, ecc.) in uno dei bar al piano di sopra. All'inizio sembra economico ma preparatevi a spendere migliaia di baht quando le ragazze vi circonderanno in gruppo con bevande di ogni tipo in mano, perché le dovrete pagare. Il conto arriva in pochi minuti e la disputa potrebbe diventare violenta.
Se invece si provano i bar al piano inferiore, si possono guardare le ballerine sul palco in tutta tranquillità anche se ogni tanto una delle ragazze vi chiederà di offrirle da bere. Lavorano a percentuale sul prezzo della bevanda e si uniranno al tavolo per una chiacchierata. Come regola generica affidatevi solo ai bar che hanno già un cospicuo numero di clienti. Una bevanda non dovrebbe costare più di 130 baht. Ogni go-go bar a Patpong chiude non più tardi delle 01:00.
Bisogna dire che Patpong è cambiato molto negli anni. Una volta era solo uno squallido covo di go-go bar; oggi invece molti visitatori arrivano in zona solo per curiosità. Non è raro vedere famiglie con bambini che camminano per queste strade la sera presto e la gente del posto ha trovato il modo di fare dei soldi da questo nuovo gruppo di turisti curiosi: un mercato notturno pieno di souvernir sovraprezzo che occupa tutta la strada e le aree circostanti (inclusa Silom Road)
Soi Thaniya
Soi Thaniya è la Patpong dei giapponesi; potrebbe sembrarvi di essere finiti a Shinjuku alla vista di innumerevoli insegne in giapponese e ragazze in kimono che invitano ad entrare. In molti bar e club non è consentito l'ingresso agli occidentali ma alcuni ristoranti non sono male per mangiare giapponese e bere sake.
Silom Soi 2 and 4
Le Soi 2 e 4 sono il centro gravitazionale della vita notturna omosessuale a Bangkok, benché oggigiorno la Soi 4 è ricca di bar non gay. Nel fine settimana la Soi 4 viene chiusa col cordone e per entrare è richiesto un documento di riconoscimento valido. Dall'altra parte di Surawong Road c'è Soi Twilight, l'area più grande di Bangkok per i go-go bar per omosessuali.
- 1 The Balcony (เดอะ แบลโคนี), 86-88 Silom Soi 4 (Stazione BTS Sala Daeng), ☎ 66 2 235 5891. Lun-Dom 17:30-02:00. Probabilmente il pub per omosessuali più famoso di Bangkok con una sede su entrambi i lati della strada. Il personale è gentile e le birre sono a prezzi ragionevoli.
- 2 DJ Station, 8/6-8 Silom Soi 2 (Stazione BTS Sala Daeng), ☎ 66 2 266 4029. Ingresso 100-200 baht con 1-2 bevute incluse. Lun-Dom 21:00-02:00. Il più famoso nightclub per omossessuali di Bangkok ed è pieno quasi ogni sera, cominciando con uno spettacolo di una ladyboy alle 23:30. Pieno fino all'inverosimile durante i fine settimana. Gran parte delle bevande costano 100 baht o si può comprare una bottiglia per 1.000 baht con in omaggio dei miscelatori. È su tre piani: il piano terra ha una grande pista da ballo, il secondo piano attira i "moneyboys" e i loro ammiratori e al terzo piano si va se non ci si riesce a muovere (ammesso che si riesca ad arrivarci). L'orario di apertura varia e in genere chiude tra le 02:00 e le 03:30.

Ingresso 300 baht con due bevute incluse. Lun-Dom 21:00-05:00. G.O.D. sta per Guys On Display (ragazzi in mostra) che è quindi quello che succede in questo posto. È l'alternativa al DJ Station e di solito rimane aperto fino alle 05:00 ed anche oltre. È frequentato da coloro a cui piace festeggiare fino a tarda notte e di solito comincia a scaldarsi tra le 01:00 e le 03:00. Subisce chiusure regolari per motivi sconosciuti quindi controllate se è aperto prima di pianificare la notte.

Più che un posto in cui mangiare tapas è una discoteca su due piani con una terrazza dalla quale guardare la gente. La musica suonata è house con delle tendenze latine, è famoso tra eterosessuali alla moda e a volte si incontrano anche dei personaggi famosi.

Durante il giorno servono degli eccellenti buffet per pranzo e fanno offerte durante la happy hour. L'arrosto della domenica è servito tra le 12:00 e le 19:00 e se ne può mangiare finché non si scoppia. TV satellitare accesa sui canali sportivi, musica dal vivo e connessione Wi-Fi gratuita.

La musica dal vivo comincia attorno alle 21:00. I Martedì e i Giovedì canta Johnny Deschamps, che è una specie di Frank Sinatra thailandese, mentre i Mercoledì i Vertigo suonano blues, pop e soul.
- 8 Tawandang German Brewery (โรงเบียร์เยอรมันตะวันแดง - พระราม 3), 462/61 Rama III Road (Stazione BTS Chong Nonsi, poi si prende la BRT per Phraram 3), ☎ 66 2 678 1114, 66 2 678 1116. Lun-Dom 17:00-01:00. Non è un bar ma una vera fabbrica di birra tedesca molto famosa tra i thailandesi alto borghesi. Preparano anche buon cibo a prezzi ragionevoli e sul palco si assiste a spettacoli interessanti e musica. Può essere difficile da trovare ma val bene il viaggio. Gran parte dei tassisti conoscono questo posto, basta chiedere per la "Rong Beer Yereman" (la sala della birra tedesca) e dovrebbero portarvi a destinazione. Si raccomanda di prenotare soprattutto nei fine settimana.

Gli amanti del jazz vorranno fermarsi al famoso bar Oriental che è sorprendentemente piccolo e intimo per un posto arredato in stile coloniale di classe, musica dal vivo e un sigaro cubano.

La nuova succursale di questo bar-ristorante da Bali, molto alla moda e di classe, ha un menu di 30 pagine con buoni cocktail dai nomi più strani. Qui l'alta società di Bangkok si mette in mostra, di conseguenza è caro e le bevande costano più di 200 baht.
- 11 Scarlett Wine Bar, 37º piano, Pullman Hotel G Building, 188 Silom Road (Stazione BTS Chong Nonsi), ☎ 66 8 9108 8744. Lun-Dom 18:00-01:00. Una vineria sul 37˚ piano con una vista eccellente sul quartiere finanziario di Silom. Sembra di stare in una cantina di vini con una fantastica selezione sia al bicchiere che alla bottiglia. I prezzi sono più bassi di quello che ci si aspetterebbe e ci sono buone bottiglie per 1.200 baht. Musica del momento e un buon servizio camerieri. Funziona anche come ristorante di tapas di varie ispirazioni.
- 12 Sirocco and Sky Bar, 63º piano, State Tower, 1055/111 Silom Road (Stazione BTS Saphan Taksin o molo Sathorn), ☎ 66 2 624 9576. Lun-Dom 18:00-01:00. Il più alto bar/ristorante del mondo, supera di qualche metro il Vertigo ma a causa della posizione leggermente fuori centro la vista non è altrettanto bella. È un complesso di ristoranti costosi, che includono il mediterraneo Sirocco e l'opzione più economica per una bevuta è lo Sky Bar che ha dei gruppi che suonano jazz quasi tutte le sere. I prezzi sono alti con birre che costano più di 300 baht e i cocktail più di 450 baht.
- 13 Vertigo and Moon Bar, 61º piano, Banyan Tree Hotel Building, Sathorn Tai Road (Stazione MRT Lumphini), ☎ 66 2 679 1200. Lun-Dom 17:30-01:00 (tempo permettendo). Il nome è adatto alla posizione di questo bar/ristorante situato sul tetto del 61˚ piano con una vista notturna spettacolare di Bangkok. Le bevande al bar sono costose (birre per 240 baht, cocktail per 350 baht più il 10% si servizio) ma vale la pena di fare l'esperienza. Cenare al ristorante invece non vale la pena: un piatto di pretenzioso cibo europeo costa sui 4.000 baht a testa.

Bei ristoranti, caffetterie, negozietti di spaghetti noodle e catene internazionali si trovano in tutte le strade di Silom.
Moderate prices
Silom è un quartiere molto frequentato dai locali e quindi si trovano molti posti dove mangiare con poco. Per un vero giapponese a prezzi umani basta entrare nei ristoranti su Soi Thaniya. Il mercato Lalai Sap ha banchetti di pesce a buon prezzo.
Bank Rak ha un ottimo miscuglio di cucine differenti e si trovano molte mangerie etniche nella zona: Thailandese, cinese, indiano e musulmano. Si trovano inoltre molti negozi di spaghetti noodles, banchetti di maiale stufato con riso (ข้าวขาหมู) e anatra arrosto con riso (ข้าวหน้าเป็ด). In quanto quartiere meno ricco, i piatti non costano più di 80 baht.

Non ci sono insegne ne scritte in inglese, solo buon cibo molto diffuso tra la gente del posto. Ordinare non è un problema perché il menu ha delle foto. È molto famoso per l'anatra ma bisogna arrivare presto prima che finisca. Servono anche del buon maiale e zuppa di noodle.

Gli alberghi sulla sponda del fiume Chao Phraya hanno anche ristoranti costosi; molto famosa è la cena a buffet dell'Oriental.

Where stay
Gran parte degli alberghi a Silom sono a 4 o 5 stelle mirati alle persone in viaggio d'affari. Gran parte degli alberghi d'alta classe si trovano lungo Silom Road e Sathorn Road. La zona di Bang Rack sul fiume Chao Phraya ha alcuni dei migliori alberghi al mondo, tipo il Mandarin Oriental, lo Shangri-La e sull'altra sponda il The Peninsula, nella zona di Thonburi.
A causa del valore elevato delle proprietà, le stanze dormitorio, che sono piuttosto sconosciute nel resto della Thailandia, stanno diventando la regola qui per i viaggiatori con pochi soldi. Ngam Duphli Road era il cuore della scena dei viaggiatori zaino in spalla di Bangkok ed aveva dozzine di guest house molto frequentate. Da quando Khao San Road ha preso il sopravvento, questa strada ha perso terreno e molte guest house sono diventate fatiscenti.

Le 119 stanze sono comunque un buon affare perché sono grandi ed hanno aria condizionata, vasca con acqua calda, accesso ad internet e piscina.

Una guest house con dormitori molto carini ed ottimo rapporto qualità/prezzo. Il personale alla reception non è dei migliori e sembrano insicuri sul sapere se hanno posto o no, quindi chiedete due volte se non sono chiari. Situato in un'area tranquilla e silenziosa ma la più vicina bancarella per il cibo è a 500 metri di distanza ed è una bella camminata arrivare ovunque. La stazione BTS più vicina è a 1Km. Sembra di non essere nel posto giusto finché non si arriva. Il personale è molto di aiuto e insistono molto sul fatto che sono a conduzione familiare. L'edificio è chiuso dalle 05:00 quindi assicuratevi di essere dentro per quell'ora altrimenti sarà una lunga notte. Chiedono di lasciare la chiave in portineria prima di uscire. È una buona opzione se si vuole un posto tranquillo dove dormire. Pulito con stanze molto spartane con connessione Wi-Fi gratuita e piuttosto veloce. Sembra che abbiano molti posti e pochi ospiti, quindi è una buona opzione se i soliti posti sono pieni.

- 1 Bangkok Post Office, 1160 Charoen Krung Road (Wat Muang Kae pier). Mon-Fri 08: 00-20: 00, Sat-Sun 08: 00-13: 00. Undelivered mail can be picked up here as letters and packages are held for two months before returning them to the sender.
Internet
Finding Wi-Fi connection in Silom is as easy as finding a girlfriend in Patpong. Most hotels have free Wi-Fi for customers (except some of the more expensive ones that you have to pay for) or available to everyone down in the lobby. Many also have computers available to browse. If you're just passing through, many cafes and restaurants offer Wi-Fi, such as the Bonita Cafe or the Molly Malone's.
