Sondershausen Castle with rotunda (left) seen from the roundabout

As the old royal seat of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, you can still visit many interesting historical buildings (Sondershausen picture collection), especially around the market in Sondershausen, although in GDR times, unfortunately, entire parts of the old town had to give way to a new district.

  • 2  Trinity Church. with a leaning tower and crypt of the last prince, is used a lot for cultural events.

The underground concerts and sporting events (bike races, marathons) are a magnet for visitors.

activities

The surroundings of Sondershausen with Windleite, Hainleite and Kyffhäuser Mountains offer very good opportunities for hiking and cycling in the woods (but nothing for flatland cyclists). The 37 hiking and 8 cycling routes that lead through Sondershausen and the surrounding area are probably evidence of this (Description of the hiking routes with many pictures),

With the Castle Festival a new tradition was established in 2006. This open-air festival takes place in June / July every year, with one piece of music theater being the focus.

Practical advice

trips

Recreation park antics: The recreation park is not directly in the city Antics. Free enclosures for bears, roe deer and fallow deer as well as wild boars can be visited without having to pay admission (parking fee of 2 euros benefits the animals). Of course there is also a restaurant (in proper style in the former Possen hunting lodge), a beer garden and of course a children's playground. The Possens plateau is part of the Hainleite and is approx. 200 m above the nearby town. A trim path has been created for wheelchair users. There are several ways to hike in the beech forests. Significant hiking trails lead over the antics, such as the Barbarossaweg, the Hainleiteweg and the main Eisenach-Wernigerode hiking trail. If there is snow in winter, even beginners can practice cross-country skiing on flat trails. The highlight in the truest sense of the word is Poss tower, with 42 m the highest lattice tower in Germany, which of course can also be climbed over 200 steps. The tower was made accessible again by an association and many donations. More information on the antics in the Picture collection antics. Arrival: From Sondershausen on the B 4 towards Erfurt. About 1 km after leaving the town, use the antics driveway on the left. But you can also go over very nicely Hiking trails Reach the antics from the city center.

Affenwald and Feuerkuppe Holiday Park: About 10 km from Sondershausen (towards Wipperdorf-Bleicherode) you will find a in Straußberg / Thuringia Monkey forest (Among other things, ring-tailed lemurs are kept in a fenced forest that you can walk through.), A summer toboggan run and the Holiday park Feuerkuppe.
