On flights where SAA is with the two regional airlines South African Express and Airlink works together, smaller aircraft are used that have around 30-90 seats. Depending on the route, modern propeller planes or regional jets are used. Both airlines used to be owned by SAA, but due to deregulation measures, Airlink became independent, although there is still close cooperation with the former parent company today.

Alliances

SAA has been a member of the aviation alliance since 2006 Star Alliance, among other things Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian Airlines belong. As a result of this membership, there is a very good link between destinations in German-speaking countries and in southern Africa, as the flight plans of the various companies are coordinated here. SAA also works with Emirates from Dubai and El Al from Israel together.

In order to be able to fly to smaller airports on domestic flights and in neighboring countries, SAA works with the two regional airlines South African Express and Airlink together, both of which fly under SAA flight numbers.

Route network and hubs

The largest hub of SAA is the airport O.R. Tambo International in Johannesburg. This is where the airline's largest base is located and most of the flight connections are from here. One focus point is still Cape Town, from where the airline offers flights to Namibia and London and ranks third in the route network Durban.

Classes of carriage

SAA offers two classes on all flights - Economy and Business Class.

Frequent flyer program

The SAA frequent flyer program is called "Voyager" and is compatible with the programs of the Star Alliance partners. For example, Miles and More customers can also collect and redeem miles here. Distance miles usually apply, at least half of the flight miles covered are received.
