Phrasebook Hungarian - Sprachführer Ungarisch
General information
Hungarian is spoken almost exclusively in Hungary, but it is also the language of some minorities, e.g. in the Slovakia , Romania and Serbia . It is one of the few languages in Europe that does not belong to the Indo-European language family. This makes orientation and understanding more difficult for the traveler, as the popular derivation of meanings from related languages is (in) very seldom possible here. A distant relationship with Northeastern European languages (Finnish, Estonian) can be seen in rare cases.
A basic knowledge of Hungarian is therefore very helpful, although there are many English-speaking residents in large cities and, among older people, German-speaking residents.
You can learn Hungarian, but it is very difficult to master this language. It has no relation to other languages, such as Spanish-Portuguese-Italian or Bulgarian-Serbian-Russian. A unique language in the world!
pronunciation
In general, words in Hungarian are spoken as they are written. The umlauts ö and ü (an ä does not exist) suit the German-speaking tongue as well as many of the character combinations.
Emphasis : In Hungarian will always only emphasizes the first syllable of the word, regardless of the length or composition of the word.
Vowels The vowels of the Hungarian language exist in a short and a long form, the long forms are identified by the characters "´" or (with umlauts) "´´". It is important to reproduce the length of the vowels correctly, otherwise the meaning of the word may change drastically:
a: round, "throaty" a , short á: like German a, long e: open, almost like Ä , short é: like German e, long- like "ee" i: as in German, short í: as in German, long o: as in German, in short ó: as in German, long u: as in German, in short ú: as in German, long ö: as in German, in short ő: like German ö, long, like "ö-ö" ü: as in German, short ű: like German ü, long, like "ü-ü"
Consonants (if different from German) r: short 'r' rolled with the tip of the tongue c: like German 'z' h: like the German 'h', but at the end of the word mute and does not seem lengthening v: like German 'w' z: like German 's' in Susanne s: like German 'sch' in peel
Character combinations dz: 'ds' sound cs: 'ch'-sound as in Chernobyl or coach dzs: 'dsch' sound as in jungle gy: 'dj' sound ly: like German 'j' in hunt ny: as in Spanish 'ñ' or 'gn' in French cognac sz: like German 'ß' ty: 'tj' sound as in Well zs: 'sh' sound as in jacket
